LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Netflix is set to debut 'Sweet Home' Season 3 on Friday, July 19, 2024, marking the series' final season.

Based on Kim Carnby and Hwang Young-chan's webtoon of the same name, the show is set in a post-apocalyptic future and follows Cha Hyun-su (Song Kang), a melancholic high school dropout who settles into the Green Home apartment complex after a tragic family tragedy.

His life takes a dramatic turn when a mysterious phenomenon begins transforming people into monsters, forcing a group of tenants to band together in a fight for survival and escape.

The first two seasons of the fantasy adventure show brilliantly portrayed the journey of inhabitants struggling to escape the life-threatening pandemic. Yet, the origins of the virus remain shrouded in mystery.

What is the cause of the Monster outbreak in 'Sweet Home'?

After two seasons, both viewers and characters alike remain unaware of the pandemic's origins.

One of the earliest residents of Green Home to transform was the woman who knocked on Hyun-su's door in Season 1, yet pinpointing patient zero proved challenging.

Soon after, a significant number of locals began transforming into monsters, causing the pandemic to rapidly spread across the entire country.

Ultimately, it was revealed that the transformations were the result of a curse, initially mistaken for a viral or biological agent responsible for the monsterization.

As a result of this curse, people's bodies and minds were overtaken by the darkest aspects of their souls, transforming them into monsters.

The show used traditional zombie clichés, including humans turning into monsters after being bitten or scratched, despite this philosophical justification.

Is there any way of combating the virus?

While not explicitly discussed, it's possible that Seo Yi-kyung's (Lee Si-young) daughter (Kim Si-a), a new neo-human character that was introduced in Season 2, could be the key to combat the outbreak.

Yi-kyung's daughter possesses unique and extraordinary abilities, including the power to read minds, manipulate thoughts, and transform individuals into monsters with a touch.

The daughter may possess the ability to lift the monster curse due to her unique powers, being the only known individual born with the curse who has gradually regained a human form.

Given her special ability to influence people's thoughts and transform them into monsters, it makes sense that she may also be able to turn neo-humans and monsters back into humans.
