'She blew us away': 'Black Panther' director Ryan Coogler recalls first meeting with Dominique Thorne
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: 'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever' was one of the most complete movies from MCU last year and it also served as a portal in introducing newer characters to the franchise, including Namor and Riri Williams AKA the Iron Heart. Namor is played by Tenoch Huerta and Riri Williams is played by Dominique Thorne, who received praise from the audience. But before Thorne wore the Iron Suit, director Ryan Coogler has revealed that she was almost in the mix of yet another role of a genius young woman.
'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever' would go on to win several accolades including Ruth E Carter winning Best Achievement in Costume Design at the Academy Awards, and Angela Bassett winning Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture.

A full circle moment
According to Comicbook, during the award ceremony at Essence Hollywood House, Thorne was awarded the Black Women in Hollywood award, with director Ryan Coogler and actor Daniel Kaluuya as the presenters. While looking back at the time before 'Black Panther', Coogler revealed the audition tape of Thorne. At that time, Thorne was so young and had auditioned for the role of Shuri along with Chadwick Boseman. However, Letitia Wright got the part. But the team and the creative directors, including Coogler did not forget Thorne for her talent. And Coogler wanted to work with Thorne and knew he would come across her again. This prediction became true when Thorne got the role of Riri Williams.
Coogler recalled the events by saying, "The first time I met Dominique was in 2016, and we were casting our film Black Panther. She was young; I think she was still in school at Cornell, and she blew us away. She got very far in the process. But it ended up not working out, and we went in a different direction. I was crushed that I wouldn't get to work with her on that project. She was so good and so young, I thought that maybe our paths would cross again".
The Promising Star in Rise
Dominic Thorne made her first on-screen appearance in 2018 film 'If Beale Street Could Talk'. Thorne played the role of Sheila Hunt, the younger sister of the protagonist Fonny Hunt. She was then seen as Judy Harmon in 'Judas and the Black Messiah' before appearing as Riri Williams/ Iron Heart in 'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever'. Thorne's upcoming projects include the movie 'Freaky Tales', which is currently filming.
Thorne's next MCU appearance is not far as she would be seen reprising her role as Iron Heart in the 6 episode show titled 'Iron Heart' which would release sometime this Fall. 'Iron Heart' is directed by Samantha Bailey and Angela Barnes. If possible, Thorne would also have a strong chance of appearing in the upcoming 'Armour Wars' movie, led by Don Cheadle's James Rhodes/ War Machine. 'Armour Wars' is said to be a continuation of 'Secret Invasion' and 'Iron Heart'.
'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever' is currently available to stream on Disney+.
