Fans claim the 2021 People's Choice Awards used K-pop for likes and engagement with no intention of recognizing talent

With the 2021 People’s Choice Awards aka PCAs finally announcing its winners, some fans are happy while others are angry. It was previously reported that South Korea would be having a big night at the US award show since we had nominations that included BTS, TXT and ‘Squid Game’. Well, the popular Netflix K-drama ‘Squid Game’ was up against major English-language shows like ‘Loki’ and ‘Outer Banks’ and won ‘The Bingeworthy Show of 2021’. We also had BTS becoming the most awarded artist but TXT fans are angry for snubbing their favorites.

At the 2021 PCAs, BTS had been nominated four times in three categories since they were up against themselves in the music video category with ‘Butter’ and the Coldplay collaboration ‘My Universe’. They won all three awards which had ARMY celebrating. But MOAs (TXT’s fandom) have not had a good night. Tomorrow X Together aka TXT is an up-and-coming K-pop group that is slowly solidifying its place in the music industry. Labelmates to BTS, the fourth-gen boy group debuted in 2019.

TXT snubbed at the 2021 PCAs

From their debut days, TXT was dubbed as 'super rookies' for the immediate success of their releases. They topped several reputable international charts, had huge album sales and were winning awards from their first year itself. In fact, their album ‘The Chaos Chapter: Freeze’ became the longest-charting K-pop album on Billboard in 2021. They became the second foreign act following BTS to have five albums top Japan’s Oricon Weekly Album Chart and went on to win the ‘Men of the Year - Pop Icon’ award at GQ Japan 2021. TXT was also the only fourth-gen act to be nominated at 2021 PCAs.

TXT was nominated for ‘The New Artist’ category alongside 24kGoldn, Bella Poarch, Giveon, Olivia Rodrigo, Rauw Alejandro, Tate McRae and The Kid LAROI. With K-pop artists having a loyal fanbase who are known for their voting and streaming skills, TXT was ahead in the voting criteria before the voting period closed. However, the award went to female pop star Olivia Rodrigo. Well, a similar situation had occurred in 2019 when Blackpink won against BTS the ‘Group of 2019’ award despite ARMY securing the category with the most votes. ARMY tried to console MOAs by explaining that voting didn’t really matter since PCAs in the end chose the winners to their liking.

'Never trust'

Angry MOAs made tweets like, “Lol, pca using txt for more twitter interaction majority of the people even forgot that pca awarding was today… if it wasn’t for bts and txt i bet their retweets won’t even reach 1k+,” “BIG YUCK TO @peopleschoice FOR USING TXT AND BTS AS NOMINEES AND FOR CLOUT BECAUSE THEY KNOW THAT KPOP FANS ARE MONSTER VOTERS AND STREAMERS SO IT'LL BENEFIT THEM. STILL, THEY PREFER TO CHOOSE THEIR "OWN" WINNERS!” and “Y'all I kinda expected this. I always knew PCA is rigged the moment they robbed bts before too. Also, since TXT isn't performing in the first place already gave me an answer. I just had high hopes bcs MOAs really did so well in the v0ting and TXT f*cking deserve that award.”

Another fan added, “This is why no one take American award shows serious anymore. They use kpop artists to get views because they know they’re lacking. We all know txt was supposed to win. Wasn’t this girl active since 2015? Started singing 2018? Blew up 2020 or w.e? New artist my ass.” Fans were also angry that TXT wasn’t even mentioned for being nominated at the award show, “Never trusting these white people award shows ever.. i spent 2 hours waiting for them to say txt won or even mention txt being nominated and NOTHING. wtf.”
