LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Let it be Hollywood or Halloween, 'Ghostbusters' is iconic. Tracing back to 1984, 'Ghostbusters' remains a staple classic from the '80s, which continued with a direct sequel in 1989 alongside an animated television series. After years of speculation of a third film, a reboot, eventually arrived in 2016 by director Paul Feig. However, the franchise returned to its original roots with the release of 'Ghostbusters: Afterlife' in 2021, which served as a sequel to the original two movies while also reintroducing the franchise to a new generation.

Speaking of 'Ghostbusters: Afterlife,' the film had an ensemble cast that stars Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, and Paul Rudd, alongside Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, and Sigourney Weaver reprising their characters from the earlier films. However, as we know a sequel is set to be released this year, thus Sony has teased the fans of the franchise with a sneak peek.

Back in the Firehouse

Filming for 'Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2' has been revealed to have begun at a key location in the franchise with a new behind-the-scenes image. The upcoming film will be a direct sequel to 2021's 'Ghostbusters: Afterlife,' which served as both a legacy sequel to the two original films and a soft reboot of the franchise. The exciting behind-the-scenes photo was shared on the 'Ghostbusters' official Twitter account. In the picture, the film’s marker has the name 'Firehouse' on it. It is possible that this could end up being the film’s name, or it could be the working title while filming. Gil Kenan has taken over the director’s duties from Jason Reitman, who helmed the previous film. Reitman wrote the screenplay for this film, however. The picture also shows Reitman holding a ghost trap, which could simply be teasing a return to tech known from the franchise.

'Ghostbusters: Afterlife' debuted to commercial acclaim

The film debuted to positive reception from fans and critics, alongside achieving financial success, earning over 204 million dollars at the global box office against a 75 million dollar budget. The 2021 film found critical and commercial success by combining the nostalgia and goodwill of the original film's cast including Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson with a story revolving around exciting newcomers including Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, and Finn Wolfhard. With the film achieving success, it comes as no surprise that a sequel is now underway, with an expected release later this year during the holiday season. The sequel is set to be released on December 20, 2023.
