'New Amsterdam' Season 4 Episode 6 Review: Cheesy and compassionate, but worth the watch

Spoilers for 'New Amsterdam Season 4 Episode 6 'Laughter and Hope and a Sock in the Eye'

The final minutes of the 'New Amsterdam' Season 4 Episode 6 titled 'Laughter and Hope and a Sock in the Eye' has generous amounts of cheese. Two patients from Dr Frome's ward were caught having sex and later exchange vows. It didn't matter that they were in the psych ward, they were in love, and for the good doctor, that was therapy in itself. There were two oddballs that had Dr Lauren Bloom bemused and exasperated, but they had that bond that vaulted over the fact that one had a stroke and the other had an injury, but still loved to stay together.

Helen Sharpe (Freema Agyeman) had a blast from the past and it wasn't a good memory. Her ex, Guillaume (Tobias Truvillion) is diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and needs a rare and risky surgery. Spearheading it is Dr Wilder (Sandra Mae Frank) who also agrees to join the hospital. The procedure is lengthy, but Wilder aces the surgery with the help of Helen, Max, and Reynolds (Jocko Sims). With the spoilers now out of the way, there's enough in the episode to show why 'New Amsterdam' is a fan favorite.

Doctors are more than just saviors. They're the closest that man comes to see a god. Lofty claim? But that's the truth. Now Dr. Wilder's surgery may not be the one that we have heard of or think can be carried out in real life, but the skill and the compassion coupled with the desire to save a life at all costs makes the chapter a heartwarming watch. There are enough subplots — the couple in the psych ward come with their own issues, but Frome understands what it is to be in love, and he stands up for what is right — uniting them.

It comes as a relief that an episode that offers a lot to take in mercifully keeps Dr Veronica Fuentes (Michelle Forbes) out of this one. Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold) has a "yes day" where he authorizes everything for everyone in Fuentes' absence and while the repercussions of that move will probably spill over for the rest of the season, his heart-to-heart with Helen in the final minutes is corny, yet adorable, and not to mention, a key storyline moving forward.

Dr Malvo and Reynolds' secret affair is no more kept under wraps as they tell Baptiste about it. This just clogs the fact that there are three storylines already in the episode and in what could have been a plot that could have delved in-depth, there is a rather short version that still baffles. Is Baptiste really okay? Will the relationship get awkward with the trio working in the same hospital?

For 'New Amsterdam' faithful, this is an episode that they would rightly call riveting. The season gets better, but maybe they could go with less cheese.

'New Amsterdam' Season 4 airs Tuesday nights at 10 pm on NBC.
