The opening montage of ‘New Amsterdam’ Season 3 shows the physical and emotional toll the pandemic has taken on the doctors and support staff at the hospital. However, as the hospital limps back to some sort of normalcy, one doctor, in particular, doesn’t or rather can’t get herself to move out of damage control mode.

Dr Lauren Bloom, the head of the ER Department at ‘New Amsterdam’, has had her own personal struggles, especially her dependence on Adderall. However, it seems that during the pandemic, Dr Bloom’s personal struggles were swept aside as she focused on the larger problem at hand.

But  Season 3 sees her becoming unpopular with fellow doctors as she is still operating in disaster control mode and dealing with patients who are not assigned to her. Dr Bloom reminds her colleagues to recall a time just a few months ago when every doctor treated every patient like they were their own. But most at the hospital do not want to be reminded of the months when thousands died every day.  While Dr Bloom going above and beyond was appreciated during the pandemic, her fellow doctors now do not appreciate her overstepping the mark.

When Bloom’s friend and nurse Casey ask her what’s going on, she says she misses the pandemic and actually being able to help people. She feels she was doing what she was meant to do. She misses making an actual difference in people's lives. Even the patients she couldn't save, she felt she could help people in their final moments, by holding people’s hands and singing songs to comfort them.

Casey surprisingly identifies with her feelings saying that when his deployment ended, he too missed the fight.  He tells her that they have been fighting a war of sorts at the hospital and that it's ok to miss the fight. But will missing the fight lead to Dr Lauren slipping in her battle against addiction? Watch this space for more updates.

'New Amsterdam' Season 3 will return on March 2 at 10 pm on NBC.
