'New Amsterdam' Season 3: Who is Dr Cassian Shin? 'Lost' alum Daniel Dae Kim plays the new head trauma surgeon
'New Amsterdam', NBC's medical drama series, has caught the attention of many in just a short two-season run. Before the Covid-19 pandemic affected productions all across the entertainment business, the series, in fact, had an episode that was tackling a pandemic. Of course, due to the reality of a pandemic in the real world, and the fact that people on set contracted the virus, the episode was put on hold.
Instead of the pandemic episode, ‘Matter of Seconds’ aired in its place. In that episode, fans were introduced to the newest star on the show Daniel Dae Kim — who had also contracted the virus in real life. Kim plays the role of new trauma surgeon Dr Cassian Shin, and therefore in addition to the romantic drama and medical anomalies, Season 3 is heavily anticipated to see where this new character takes the series.
If you've watched the episode, you must have recognized Daniel Dae Kim from shows such as 'Lost' where he played the role of Jin-Soo Kwon and 'Hawaii Five-O' where he plays the role of Detective Lieutenant Chin Ho Kelly. The actor is also an executive producer on ABC's hit medical drama 'The Good Doctor' where Kim also has a recurring role as Dr Jackson Han.
If that doesn't ring any bells, he's also appeared in releases such as 'She-Ra and the Princesses of Power', 'The Legend of Korra' and 'The Andromeda Strain'. But, what we're more interested in as of now, is his new character as Dr Cassian Shin!
Who is Dr Shin?
What we know so far from the aired episode is that Dr Shin, the hospital's new hire is called it by Dr Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold) a week earlier than he was supposed to start his job. The reason? The hospital is currently short-staffed. In order for Dr. Shin to get accustomed to his new environment, he was assigned Dr Helen Sharpe (Freema Agyeman) and, in that short period, the audience is introduced to the way Dr Shin handles his job.
With many reports calling his medical practices "unorthodox", what we see is Dr Sharpe's patience running quite thin. He was also called out on his tardiness by Dr Lauren Bloom (Janet Montgomery)!
While new characters bring us much joy, we have to say we had a bit of deja-vu as we were reminded of Dr Gregory House (Hugh Laurie) from 'House'. It's only been one episode in which Dr Shin has had screen time, so our assumptions have limited resources. He definitely has his particular way of doing things, which in itself will pose many challenges when it comes to his colleagues.
However, what caught us a bit off guard — in a good way — was his potential romance with Dr Sharpe. It seems that he is obviously going to have a recurring role in the upcoming season and we're wondering if a romance does spark up, will he become a season regular? They were already walking down the street together in 'Matter of Seconds', so we can't be too off on this plotline.
Furthermore, what makes the possible romance between Dr Shin and Dr Sharpe more interesting is the fact that Dr Sharpe's relationship with Dr Goodwin will change. Especially since he broke things off with Alice Healy (Alison Luff).
Dr Shin will definitely shake up the interpersonal dynamics of the hospital when it comes to relationships and seems to be a groundbreaking additional asset when it comes to the medical staff. His narrative in the series is one of the biggest reasons many are tuning in, besides the fact that this is an exceptional medical drama. Most importantly, we're also ready to see the Pandemic episode air, which we can imagine will be high strung — how will Dr. Shin handle a busier day than usual at the Bellevue Hospital?
The release date of 'New Amsterdam' Season 3 is yet to be released. All we know, for now, is that it will air sometime early next year on NBC.
