'My K-Star Family': K-pop idols marry on show, fans ask if it’s 'We Got Married 2.0'

When it comes to entertainment, South Korea knows how to keep things interesting and unique every step of the way. From K-pop survival shows that literally take place in the wild like MBC’s ‘Extreme Debut: Wild Idol’ to ‘We Got Married’ and KBS’ ‘The Return of Superman’ where celebrity fathers have to take care of their children and do missions with the occasional help from another celebrity, we get some fun variety shows. And now we have the new reality show ‘My K-Star Family’ which has roped in several favorites like BTOB’s Eunkwang, Super Junior’s Yesung and WayV.

It was previously reported that MBC would be producing a new show where celebrity contestants would live like a family and do challenges related to house chores. Also known as ‘How A Family Is Made’ and ‘We Became A Family’, ‘My K-Star Family’ has cast 12 K-pop idols and celebrities for its first season. We have child actor Kim Kang-hoon, former Wonder Girls star Yubin, g.o.d’s Son Hoyoung, Super Junior’s Yesung, BTOB’s Eunkwang, ex-I.O.I member Nayoung, ex-IZ*ONE idol Hyewon, The Boyz's Hyunjae, AB6IX’s Daehwi, and WayV’s Xiaojun, Yangyang and Hendery.

Yesung x Nayoung and Daehwi x Hyewon

The first episode of ‘My K-Star Family’ aka ‘We Became A Family’ aired on December 6 on Mnet and Discovery Channel Korea. In the premiere, we were introduced to the two couples in the ‘family’. We had Super Junior’s Yesung proposing to Nayoung with flowers and balloons. We got a cute awkward moment as the ring he had selected didn’t fit her ring finger. The second couple to get married on-screen happened to be AB6IX’s Daehwi and Hyewon. Since they are friends, both were glad that they were comfortable with each other. Both of them had also participated in the ‘Produce’ survival shows and ended up winning.

On top of it, we have Yubin 'adopting' the three WayV members — Xiaojun, Yangyang and Hendery as her younger brothers. As for the third family unit, we have the 'uncles' Hoyoung, Eunkwang and Hyunjae with their 'nephew' Kang-hoon. Fans found the whole thing hilarious and compared the show to ‘We Got Married’. ‘We Got Married’ was a reality show where celebrities had to fake marry and do challenges together as a couple. We had the likes of 2PM, SHINee, Super Junior, Mamamoo and Girls’ Generation members participating.

'Pls this is so funny'

Fans had opposite reactions to the two new couples. Yesung and Nayoung’s scenes were awkward but romantic while Daehwi and Hyewon’s scenes were funny and chaotic. Fans made posts like, “Nayoung and Yesung's first meeting is like those typical first meetings, awkward yet heart fluttering. I could sense that they have lots of similarities so I'm looking forward to see how they grow closer,” and “When yesung sang the message in the letter & explained it afterwards, that small coincidences come together to create miracles, then telling nayoung that it’s that day (when they met there) MAAAN IM SO SOFT.” Other fans made memes for Daehwi and Hyewon, “Pls this is so funny,” and “Honey, i’m home-.”

Viewers also made posts like, “Man we got married 2.0 looking like the cast didnt know they were going to be married,” “Mnet always making eveything seem like a survival sht or sumn like??? the way they edited the scene where nayoung and yesung entered the house and found out they have to share a house with daehwi and hyewon pls,” and “Shut up they still do this show !?!?!? I thought it ended in like 2018.”
