'Lizzie McGuire' reboot on Disney +: Who could be back and what their characters could be up to when iconic show returns

At the D23 Expo, it was announced that a reboot series of the original 'Lizzie McGuire' would be streaming on Disney Plus, with Hilary Duff set to reprise her role. Here's all who we want back
UPDATED AUG 27, 2019

Fans around the world bid goodbye to Lizzie McGuire and her friends and family when the last episode aired on February 2004. However, the canonical end to Lizzie's story was shown in 'The Lizzie McGuire Movie' released in May 2003. Set after Lizzie and her friends have graduated middle school, the movie shows Lizzie and her classmates going on a tour to Rome, Italy. While in Rome, Lizzie meets her doppelganger, a famous Italian singer, Isabella. The movie ends with a concert where Lizzie defeats the bad guy (Paolo, who used Lizzie to discredit Isabella) and shares a kiss with Gordo -- one of her two best friends -- indicating that Gordo and Lizzie would start a relationship.

Ever since the reboot series was announced, fans have been clamoring for details. While Hilary Duff has talked about Lizzie being a 30-year old living in New York, working her dream job and engaged to her dream guy, she has not confirmed details about other returning cast members.

That Lizzie is dating a gorgeous chef seemed to confirm to fans that Lizzie and Gordo's relationship did end.

We thought of putting together which of the original cast members might come back and what their characters could have been up to in the fifteen years since we last saw them.

Matt and Miranda

We think the cast members most likely to return are Jake Thomas and Lalaine as Lizzie's younger brother Matt, and her best friend Miranda Sanchez respectively. Thomas, Lalaine, and Duff reunited in 2015 and Jake Thomas happily shared the evidence on Instagram. Considering Duff has been working on getting the original series rebooted for some time now, it could be that Lalaine and Thomas were in the know about the reboot.

So what could Matt and Miranda be up to?

Miranda was missing from the last six episodes of the original series and the movie due to Lalaine's scheduling conflicts. Lalaine's absence was explained by saying that Miranda was visiting her relatives in Mexico. In the original series, Miranda is a spunky, self-conscious girl who stands up for her friends. She wanted to become a backup singer while her career aptitude test showed that she should become a Navy SEAL.

Lalaine herself is a singer, so we think that when Miranda reunites with Lizzie, she is going to be a music teacher. Fun fact: Selena Gomez was set to play Stevie Sanchez, Miranda's younger sister, in a spinoff that never aired. Perhaps, Selena could join the gang when the reboot airs.

Matt is Lizzie's scheming little brother, forever seen with something up his sleeve. This could only mean one thing of course, that Matt is in politics. Actor Jake Thomas posted on Reddit that he hopes to be back for the reboot.

Gordo and Kate

These are two characters we are not sure will be back. Both Adam Lamberg and Ashlie Brillault who play Gordo and Kate respectively, are no longer in the acting business. Brillault is now a criminal defense lawyer and has not acted since 'Lizzie McGuire'. Lamberg last acted in 2008 and keeps off social media so his current status is unknown. While it is doubtful that the two will return, seeing the reaction to the news of the reboot, perhaps a miracle could be pulled off.

Gordo has always wanted to be a filmmaker, so even if he is just mentioned in the reboot series, he could be away, filming an important project for ecological conservation and Kate might just be a lawyer, but more Elle Woods a la 'Legally Blonde'.

Ethan and Larry

Ethan was Lizzie's erstwhile crush during the series before she began a relationship with Gordo. Ethan was popular for his looks and great hair but was also known not to be the brightest star in the sky. One of his iconic lines in the show is when he is asked advice for good hair. Ethan replies that he never follows the "repeat" part of the "rinse and repeat" instruction on the back of the bottle. Larry is the stereotypical geek of the school and was shown to have an unrequited crush on Miranda. While Larry isn't big on hygiene, he is shown to be intelligent with a deep interest in science-fiction.

Both Clayton Snyder and Kyle Downes, who play Ethan and Larry respectively, still act. Could Ethan be Lizzie's gorgeous fiance who is a chef? Or perhaps he is a gym teacher back home, still with great hair. Larry obviously would have scaled great heights and he's probably a film producer working on Marvel films of the 'Lizzie McGuire' universe.

Sam and Jo

Lizzie McGuire wouldn't be Lizzie McGuire, if not for her parents. We're sure her mom and dad will be back for the reboot as they help Lizzie figure out her life in her 30s. Robert Carradine and Hallie Todd are both seasoned actors and the reboot would not be complete without them.

Hallie Todd has released two books in real life, titled 'Being Young Actors' and 'Parenting The Young Actor', so we think in the 'Lizzie McGuire' universe, Jo McGuire would certainly have written a book or two about raising Lizzie and Matt.
