'Lizzie McGuire' reboot: Release date, plot, cast, and everything you need to know about the Disney Plus series starring Hilary Duff

Millennials' favorite pre-teen is set to return as an adult in Disney Plus' reboot of the beloved 2000s show about Lizzie McGuire and her friends as they navigate middle school and life with Hilary Duff reprising her iconic role of the title character

Millennials rejoice! Lizzie McGuire is coming back to our screens. Fifteen years after fans bid adieu to their favorite girl-next-door, Hilary Duff will be returning as Lizzie, and yes, her 13-year-old animated blabbering self will be back as well. Duff made the announcement via Instagram of her return as Lizzie McGuire to Disney's new streaming platform Disney+, while Gary Marsh, President and Chief Creative Officer for Disney Channels Worldwide, confirmed the piece of news during the D23 Expo. The original show ran had initially run for two seasons from 2001 to 2004, with a movie being released in 2003. Release date

An official release date for the reboot has not been released yet. Since production for the show has yet to start, we expect the reboot to hit Disney+ sometime in 2020. Follow this space for regular updates.

Plot

In the original Disney Channel show, Lizzie McGuire was an average, clumsy 13-year old girl trying to find her place in the world. Lizzie, along with her friends Miranda and Gordo navigate life in middle school, dealing with bullies (Kate), crushes (Lizzie's crush on Ethan, Gordo's crush on Lizzie), teenage relationships, annoying little brothers (Lizzie's younger brother Matt), overprotective parents and popularity contests. The signature aspect of the Disney Channel show was the animated Lizzie through whom the viewers could hear Lizzie's thoughts as she dealt with things.

The reboot is set to pick up with Lizzie as an adult millennial in New York, surer of herself, but still learning to live life fully and learn from her mistakes. In an interview with Good Morning America, Duff offered more details about the show. According to her, Lizzie is an apprentice to a top interior designer in New York and is engaged to a chef. The show will begin as Lizzie is on the cusp of turning 30. As in the original series, Lizzie's 13-year old animated self will be featured prominently to let the viewers know Lizzie's thought process.

The only confirmed cast member as of August 2019 is Hilary Duff. Duff became a household name after her role as the eponymous Lizzie McGuire. She also acted in teen romantic comedies like 'A Cinderella Story', ''Raise Your Voice', and 'The Perfect Man'. In 2015, Duff returned to television in TV Land's 'Younger', playing the role of Kelsey Peters.

It was confirmed October 24 the 'Lizzie McGuire' sequel series will see original cast members Hallie Todd, Robert Carradine and Jake Thomas reprise their roles of Jo, Sam and Matt McGuire in the Disney+ show. According to a report in Deadline, the cast members including Duff met for a reading 15 years after the original show ended.

Terri Minsky, the original creator of the show is set to return as showrunner for the reboot. She also created the ABC sitcom 'Less than Perfect' and the Disney Channel show 'Andi Mack'.
