'Grey's Anatomy' fans have a new reason to wonder about Cristina Yang's possible return. ABC has shared a throwback photo of Sandra Oh's character as Season 23 production gets underway, and the timing has sparked plenty of speculation. On August 12, ABC posted an old photo of Cristina on social media with the caption, "heavy on the Yang." Fans quickly filled the comments with excitement and theories about what the post could mean.

Some viewers think the post could hint at Cristina returning to Grey Sloan Memorial. The theory has grown alongside speculation that Meredith Grey and Nick Marsh could be heading toward a wedding. Fans now wonder if Cristina could appear for the occasion. There is still no confirmation that Oh has filmed anything for the new season. ABC's post only features an old image of the character, so it does not confirm a comeback.

Oh left 'Grey's Anatomy' after Season 10. She moved to Switzerland after accepting Preston Burke's offer to take over his position at his hospital in Zurich, giving the character a clear reason to remain away from Seattle. However, she has still remained part of the show's story. Meredith and other longtime characters have mentioned her over the years, and she has stayed in touch through messages. Oh has previously explained that her departure was a mutual decision with Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers after she felt Cristina's story had reached its natural end.

She spent 10 seasons playing the character and wanted to bring that chapter to a close. Her comments have not fully closed the door, though. In 2025, Oh said she understood why viewers still wanted Cristina back.

The show has a history of bringing familiar faces back. Season 22 featured the returns of Maggie Pierce, Jackson Avery, and Addison Montgomery. Cristina remains one of the biggest names from the original cast who has yet to make a comeback. That history makes ABC's latest post more interesting to longtime viewers.

The network knows how strongly fans feel about Cristina, and the new caption has given them another reason to speculate. For now, the evidence points only to a nostalgic social media post. There is no official announcement that Sandra Oh will return as Cristina in Season 23. Still, the character's popularity has never faded.
