SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA: The Internet is debating over the best actress Oscar nomination of Andrea Riseborough in 'To Leslie' and Ana De Armas 'Blonde', where she enacted the life of Marilyn Monroe. There was a lot of controversy surrounding the sudden nomination of Riseborough at the Oscars which even led the Academy to move ahead with an investigation into the social media campaign that featured excessive support for the movie 'To Leslie'.

According to The Guardian, 'To Leslie' is a movie that did not succeed at the box office only obtaining $27,000 as a collection when it premiered in theatres in October, 2022. There were also discussions regarding why Viola Davis and actress Danielle Deadwyler did not make it to the list.

What is the controversy over Andrea Riseborough's Oscar nomination?

As previously reported by MEAWW, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences ordered an investigation regarding the excessive support the movie 'To Leslie' has received on social media. Announcing the investigation, it said, “It is the Academy’s goal to ensure that the awards competition is conducted in a fair and ethical manner, and we are committed to ensuring an inclusive awards process,” the statement reads. “We are conducting a review of the campaign procedures around this year’s nominees, to ensure that no guidelines were violated, and to inform us whether changes to the guidelines may be needed in a new era of social media and digital communication. We have confidence in the integrity of our nomination and voting procedures, and support genuine grassroots campaigns for outstanding performances.”

However, on Tuesday, January 31, Academy chief executive Bill Kramer claimed, "The issues did not rise to the level that the film's nomination should be rescinded. However, we did discover social media and outreach campaigning tactics that caused concern. These tactics are being addressed with the responsible parties directly." The statement read, "The purpose of the Academy's campaign regulations is to ensure a fair and ethical awards process - these are core values of the Academy. Given this review, it is apparent that components of the regulations must be clarified to help create a better framework for respectful, inclusive, and unbiased campaigning. These changes will be made after this awards cycle and will be shared with our membership. The Academy strives to create an environment where votes are based solely on the artistic and technical merits of the eligible films and achievements."

'Oh please, stop it with the hate already!' Fans defend Andrea Riseborough and Ana De Armas amid criticism

The Internet is now discussing the nomination of these actresses. A user wondered, "if they're gonna investigate andrea riseborough they better look too at how Blonde made it to the oscars looking like this." To which, a user defended the actress and said, "They nominated Ana for Best Actress not Blonde for Best Picture has nothing to do with the quality of the film itself, plenty of films can get bad reviews but still get Oscar noms based off of one specific element of the film." A user claimed, "Baby the answer is in your own post, they’re going to investigate Andrea bc she got nominated. Blonde as a film got nothing. No makeup, no cinematography and specially no writing. Now why would they open an investigation? I swear the Ana hate train on here is so corny."

A user noted, "That her performance stuck with a lot of people even when most thought the movie stunk may make her the most impressive actress this year." "Because it’s a masterpiece and Ana de Armas gave the best performance of the year," claimed a user. A user wrote, "Ana Ds Armas in the Blonde performance was phenomenal.. is was great on the film.. Actors branch fault in it come on Andrea Riseborough deserves the nominations too.. but Williams over Deadwyler.. that's the one they should investigate." "Oh please, stop it w/ the hate already! Ana was phenomenal in Blonde & her situation is not even remotely comparable to Andrea Riseborough's. To start, unlike Riseborough, everyone from AACTA to BAFTA to the Golden Globes to SAG nominated Ana's performance in Blonde," explained a fan.

Another user claimed, "Have you looked at the list of winners and nominations over the past 20 years? Best Actress is FILLED with mid-poor films with stunning performances that rise above the material. Click some of those reviews and read them. A huge % will praise de Armas for transcending the film." "Golden Globes and Sag validated her name in the race, even Bafta nominated her An up and coming young actress can always chances if her names it's popping up in precursors," noted a user.
