Oscars Nominations 2023: Internet 'furious' after Ana de Armas gets Best Actress nod instead of Viola Davis
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: When 'Blonde' premiered at last year's Venice Film Festival, the world got to know that it would be one of the most polarizing movies in recent history and it indeed was. Even though a large section of society applauded Ana de Armas for portraying Marilyn in the movie, fans are not happy with the actress' nomination in the Best Actress category at the 95th Academy Awards.
The fictionalized take on Marilyn Monroe's life chronicles the journey of one of Hollywood’s biggest icons and shows how she became one of the most popular sex symbols of the 1950s and early 1960s. Even though Monroe became an icon during the aforementioned period, her troubled personal life also received a lot of attention. Despite being one of the most popular actors at the time, Monroe found herself surrounded by far more enemies than friends. The movie received extreme reviews with some saying "it's great" while others gave it zero stars. So, no one expected Armas to be nominated at the Academy Awards and their nightmares have turned into reality.

The actress will be up against the likes of Cate Blanchett ('TAR'), Michelle Yeoh ('Everything Everywhere All at Once'), Andrea Riseborough ('To Leslie'), and Michelle Williams ('The Fabelmans') for the coveted trophy.
Social media went berserk as soon as they saw Armas' name on the list and the reactions have been not-so-lovely. One of the fans wrote, "I don't care how good of an actress Ana de Armas is. #Oscars2023 should NEVER have stooped low enough to even recognize a film as disgusting, sexist, and exploitative as "Blonde". What a disgrace." Another fan wrote, "Viola Davis not being nominated by The Woman King while we have an atrocity that was Blonde with Ana de Armas nominated, it's beyond revolting." Another social media user wrote, "breaking my silence: blonde was an awful, exploitative mess but ana de Armas performance was also terrible. this was not a case of a bad movie with a good performance, it was terrible in every aspect."

"I think Blonde is one of the most misogynist movies I’ve ever seen but I completely agree with Ana de Armas’ nom. Whatever you think of the film, she threw herself into it in a way very few actors did this year," wrote another user. "Nobody will ever be 100 percent happy with Oscar nominations, but I will never understand how Ana de Armas got NOMINATED for BLONDE over Viola Davis and Mia Goth. Like, I thought everyone agreed Blonde was bad?" tweeted another fan.
