What is the controversy surrounding Andrea Riseborough's Oscar nomination?
According to The Guardian, the Academy announced an investigation into campaign procedures after Andrea's name was included in the list of Best Actress awards. The fact that Andrea made it into this category surprised many, considering the profile of the film. The film had grossed only 270000 dollars at the box office and was not even considered at the Golden Globes Awards. Andrea told the magazine, "It was so hard to believe it would ever happen because we really hadn't been in the running for anything else," she said. "Even though we had a lot of support, the idea it might actually happen seemed so far away." Winslet also said it was "hard-won" and "deeply deserved."
Meanwhile, the academy released a statement saying, “It is the Academy’s goal to ensure that the awards competition is conducted in a fair and ethical manner, and we are committed to ensuring an inclusive awards process,” the statement reads. “We are conducting a review of the campaign procedures around this year’s nominees, to ensure that no guidelines were violated, and to inform us whether changes to the guidelines may be needed in a new era of social media and digital communication. We have confidence in the integrity of our nomination and voting procedures, and support genuine grassroots campaigns for outstanding performances.”
Later, Academy chief executive Bill Kramer claimed, "The issues did not rise to the level that the film's nomination should be rescinded. However, we did discover social media and outreach campaigning tactics that caused concern. These tactics are being addressed with the responsible parties directly." The statement released on Tuesday, January 31 by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences read, "The purpose of the Academy's campaign regulations is to ensure a fair and ethical awards process - these are core values of the Academy. Given this review, it is apparent that components of the regulations must be clarified to help create a better framework for respectful, inclusive, and unbiased campaigning. These changes will be made after this awards cycle and will be shared with our membership. The Academy strives to create an environment where votes are based solely on the artistic and technical merits of the eligible films and achievements."
'One of the best of the decade'
A group of Andrea's fans is all praises for her performance. A user asked, "Hard at work on my next Oscars video! Have you watched To Leslie yet?." To which another added, "#AndreaRiseborough doesn't need an Oscar, she's WAY better than the other actors nominated. If you still don't know who she is, it's probably because she never does the same role twice. I remember discovering her 10 years ago in Shadow Lover. My favorite actress ever since." "That is a beautiful film with a great revelation of performance and she deserves more love and of course deserves a nomination," read a tweet. A user added, "Yep, she’s excellent as usual. I would vote for Yeoh but Riseborough would be my second choice (sorry if Blanchett’s stans will disagree)." A user claimed, "She was excellent, especially considered she’s British and I liked the movie too. But it may start to get overhyped, we’re not bout to act like it was the most groundbreaking either." A user explained,"Yes. Amazing performance. One of the best of the decade. For real." A
A user claimed, "Its a 7 out of 10, at best. Riseborough is a 9." "Yep, saw it and loved it. Besides Andrea Riseborough's excellent performance, I also liked the work of Allison Janney and Stephen Root in this film," claimed another. "Yea. Definitely deserving of the nomination despite the potentially rule breaking that went on by others to secure her the nomination," explained another user. A user noted, "Yes, and I think about her performance everyday!!!." A fan stated, "Have not stopped thinking about it since seeing it."
