Glen Powell-led thriller 'How to Make a Killing' features an insane cast and here's how you can stream it
The filmmaker behind ‘Emily the Criminal’ is back. Writer-director John Patton Ford, the mind who steered that tense indie breakout into cult-favorite territory, has returned with a sharp new thriller called ‘How to Make a Killing’. The movie arrives in U.S. theaters on Friday, February 20. The story is about Becket Redfellow, played by Glen Powell, who seems to have been born with a silver spoon in his mouth, except that spoon was yanked away and tossed across the room before he could even grip it. Disowned by his absurdly wealthy relatives, Becket is raised instead by a blue-collar family that values hard work and a tight budget.
It’s a classic fish-out-of-water setup. Only the fish remembers the ocean. And he wants back in. As an adult, Becket isn’t content to sit on the sidelines while the rest of his bloodline lounges on inherited millions. He believes he’s owed a slice of that fortune, and he’s not exactly planning to send a polite email asking for it. Ford’s script takes inspiration from the 1949 British classic ‘Kind Hearts and Coronets’, originally directed by Robert Hamer and written by John Dighton. Meanwhile, the cast list reads like a who’s who of sharp character actors and rising stars. They include Margaret Qualley, Jessica Henwick, Bill Camp, Zach Woods, Topher Grace, and Ed Harris.
Right now, if you want to see Becket’s grand plan in action, you’ll need to buy a ticket. The movie is opening in select theaters across the United States, and there’s no streaming option at launch. Not yet. If you’re wondering whether it’ll pop up on Netflix anytime soon, the short answer is: don’t hold your breath. The film is being distributed in the U.S. by A24, and thanks to a 2023 distribution agreement between A24 and Warner Bros. Discovery, the studio’s theatrical releases eventually head to Warner Bros. Discovery's streaming platform, HBO Max. So if you’re planning a couch viewing instead of a theater run, patience will be your best friend.
Looking at recent patterns, there’s a rough timeline you can circle in pencil. One recent A24 title, ‘If I Had Legs I’d Kick You’, began streaming on HBO Max a little over four months after hitting theaters, and around three months after it became available to rent or buy digitally. If this new thriller follows a similar path, it could arrive on digital platforms sometime in mid-to-late March. Streaming on HBO Max might land closer to late June. Nothing official has been announced yet. Studios can always shuffle dates. As for HBO Max pricing, subscriptions currently start at $10.99 per month with ads, while an ad-free plan costs $18.49 per month.
