Callum Turner and Margaret Qualley board ‘Possession’ remake with Batman star in production seat
Are you ready to be engulfed in the horror-filled world of the 1981 cult-classic 'Possession' remake? Paramount recently announced its lead pair. Originally directed and written by Andrzej Żuławski, the remake, announced in 2024, has Robert Pattinson taking the producing chair. To add more excitement, the makers recently announced that Callum Turner and Margaret Qualley will lead the new movie.
The remake of 'Possession' will be directed by 'Smile' creator Parker Finn, with Pattinson attached as a producer despite never being officially confirmed as part of the cast. However, details about the new characters, including those played by Turner and Qualley, remain undisclosed. The original 1981 psychological horror film starred Sam Neill and Isabelle Adjani as a married couple whose relationship unravels after the wife leaves her husband under mysterious circumstances, as per Coming Soon.
The film earned critical acclaim, including Adjani's Best Actress win at Cannes, and holds an 86% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The official synopsis reads, "After Anna reveals to her husband, Mark, that she is having an affair, she leaves him and their son. Mark is devastated and seeks out Heinrich, the man who cuckolded him, only to receive a beating. After a series of violent confrontations between Mark and Anna, Mark hires a private investigator to follow her. Anna descends into madness, and it's soon clear that she is hiding a much bigger secret, one that is both inexplicable and shocking."
Turner recently appeared in A24's romantic comedy 'Eternity' and is set to star in 'One Night Only' in August 2026, as well as the satirical thriller 'Rosebush Pruning.' Meanwhile, Qualley will next be seen in 'How to Make a Killing' alongside Glen Powell, and in Ridley Scott's sci-fi film 'The Dog Stars,' starring Jacob Elordi. On the other hand, Finn is currently finishing 'Smile' 2 and is using 'Possession' to step beyond his horror franchise with a more elevated yet intimate project.
After debuting with 'Smile,' the highest-grossing horror film of 2022, Finn signed a first-look deal with Paramount. However, 'Possession' falls outside that agreement, as per The Hollywood Reporter. Notably, there is also an Indonesian adaptation of the celebrated movie titled 'Possession: Kerasukan,' directed by Razka Robby Ertanto. Released in 2024, the movie has already been streaming on Netflix for months.
The remake follows a similar premise: a man returning from military duty discovers that his wife wants a divorce and uncovers a sinister secret. Meanwhile, Żuławski’s original also received a 4K restoration, as per Bloody Disgusting. 'Possession: Kerasukan' stars Darius Sinathrya and Carissa Perusset as the estranged couple, with Sara Fajira, Arswendy Bening Swara, Nugie, and Sulthan Hamonangan in supporting roles. The film was written by screenwriter Lele Laila.
