Girls on Top: Meet ALL the members of female supergroup Avengers of K-pop
In 2019 we had SuperM and it looks like in 2022 we will get Girls on Top. With more than 50 acts debuting every year, it is quite difficult for some to stand out and make a mark in K-pop. And so, we have labels including the Big 3 (JYPE, SM, YG) introducing all kinds of concepts to catch the eye of the general public. SM Entertainment has been often known for their bizarre and unique ideas for their acts from the rotational concept of Super Junior to the infinite member group NCT.
In 2019, to break into the American market, SM decided to make a supergroup with members of existing popular boy groups like SHINee, EXO, and NCT. They were marketed as the avengers of K-pop with the members being some of the best in their fields. We had SHINee’s Taemin, EXO’s Kai and Baekhyun, and NCT’s Taeyong, Mark, Ten, and Lucas. They dropped some of the iconic singles like ‘Jopping’, ‘Tiger Inside’ and ‘No Manners’ that also went viral in the West. Well, following their success, SM has decided to introduce the female Avengers of K-pop – Girls on Top.

What is Girls on Top?
On December 26, SM introduced their new girl group. Called Girls on Top, we have iconic female idols and all-rounders under the label debuting together. They will have their first public performance at the SMTOWN Live 2022 concert on January 1, 2022. Following the special stage, they will officially debut on January 3 at 6 pm KST (4 am ET) with 'Step Back'. It is a hip hop single with R&B elements about women empowerment and will be available on all major music streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, MelOn, and more. Additionally, SM has decided to make Girls on Top a rotational group.
The label had first tried the idea with their boy group Super Junior. New members would be added and older members would leave every year. It is a brilliant tactic as new artists will not have to struggle in terms of popularity as they will immediately gain the fandom of the established group. However, it did not work with Super Junior as the fans were attached to all of the members and did not want them to leave.

But with Girls on Top being a project group, all of the members are already popular soloists and/or part of groups like aespa and Red Velvet. And so, fans are excited to see some of their other favorites who did not make it into the first lineup debuting with Girls on Top. The first lineup is called ‘GOT the beat’ and this particular unit will be focusing on powerful performances and fierce dance songs. NCT U has a similar concept where some members of NCT temporarily create a sub-unit as NCT U and drop music together once in a while.
The first set of members of Girls on Top are: BoA - She is a first-gen soloist and is one of the artists responsible for the Hallyu Wave and bringing K-pop to the West.
Taeyeon - She is the leader of the second-gen girl group Girls’ Generation.
Hyoyeon - She is the main dancer and rapper of Girls’ Generation.
Seulgi - She is the main dancer of Red Velvet.
Wendy - She is the main vocalist of Red Velvet.
Karina - She is the leader and main dancer of aespa.
Winter - She is the visual, lead vocalist and dancer of aespa.
All of the members are fierce dancers known for their performances, along with being talented vocalists.
