'Our Kind of People' Full Cast List: Meet Yaya DaCosta and stars from Fox drama
'Our Kind of People' is gearing up for a release on Fox and audiences could not be more curious! The show follows Angela Vaughn, who is a strong-willed mom determined to reclaim her family’s name and make an impact with her revolutionary hair care line but soon discovers a dark secret about her own mother’s past that will turn her world upside-down and shake up the community forever.
The series takes place in the aspirational world of Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard, a historical stronghold where the rich and powerful Black elite have come to play for more than 50 years. The show, which is inspired by Lawrence Otis Graham’s provocative, critically acclaimed book, 'Our Kind of People: Inside America's Black Upper Class', is a soapy, thrilling exploration of race and class in America and an unapologetic celebration of black resilience and achievement. Yaya DaCosta
Camara DaCosta Johnson, better known as Yaya DaCosta, is an American actress and model. Born in New York City, and of Brazilian and African-American descent, she was raised in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City. After finishing second on Cycle 3 of 'America's Next Top Model', DaCosta went on to have a successful career. In addition to English, she speaks Portuguese, French, and Spanish. For six seasons, Yaya DaCosta has starred as ER Nurse April Sexton on network drama 'Chicago Med'.
In 2015, DaCosta played the title role in the Angela Bassett-directed Whitney Houston biopic 'Whitney.' Her TV credits include 'Ugly Betty,' 'All My Children', 'House', 'Body of Proof', 'Army Wives', 'Mercy', 'Law & Order: SVU' and 'Eve'. Morris Chestnut
Morris Lamont Chestnut is an American actor. Chestnut was born in Cerritos, California, the son of Morris Chestnut Sr and Shirley Chestnut. Chestnut's first professional acting role was as Jadon in Freddy's Nightmares - 'A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Series', Season 2. His career continued to rise steadily with co-starring roles in standard big-budget studio films such as 'Under Siege 2: Dark Territory' opposite Steven Seagal and Katherine Heigl and 'G.I. Jane' opposite Demi Moore. Chestnut has had critical and commercial success as a film and television star for more than two decades. Chestnut’s most recent films include 'When the Bough Breaks', 'The Perfect Guy' and the heist thriller 'Bus 657', opposite Robert De Niro. Chestnut will play Raymond Dupont in 'Our Kind of People'.
Joe Morton
Joseph Thomas Morton Jr is an American stage, television and film actor. Morton graduated from Andrew Jackson High School and studied drama at Hofstra University. Morton is best known for his dynamic role as Rowan Pope in Shonda Rhimes’ groundbreaking network series, 'Scandal'. He recently starred as Reverend Arthur Finer on the network series 'God Friended Me' and recurred on 'The Politician'. He also recurred on 'Grace & Frankie'. Previously, Morton appeared in the DC superhero films 'Batman V. Superman' and 'Justice League', as well as 'Godzilla'. Morton made his Broadway debut in the Tony Award-winning musical 'Hair', followed by his starring role in 'Raisin', for which he garnered a Tony Award nomination and Theatre World Award. Morton plays Teddy Franklin in 'Our Kind of People'.
Nadine Ellis
As an actor, Nadine Ellis has played a range of incredible women on television over the years - both fictional and non-fictional, including unsung NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson on the network series 'Timeless'. She led an ensemble cast as a series regular in the cable comedy 'Let’s Stay Together'; played a meddling mom on 'The Greenhouse Academy'; and recurred on 'Shameless' as Dr. Williams. She also is recurring as mom Keena in 'All American: Homecoming.' In her 20-year dance career, she’s had the opportunity to work with prestigious talent, including leading the Dynamites in the film 'Hairspray', dancing with Beyoncé at the VMAs and getting her start as one of the original Pussycat Dolls. Ellis plays Leah Franklin-Dupont in 'Our Kind of People'.
Kyle Bary
In 2018, Kyle Barry landed a spot in New York City's ABC Discovers Showcase. He currently can be seen on the streaming series 'Ginny & Georgia', and most recently wrapped production as one of the lead roles in 'Beauty', a Lena Waithe-scripted streaming film. Barry will be playing Quincy Dupont in 'Our Kind of People'.
Alana Bright
'Our Kind of People' marks Alana Bright’s professional acting debut. She was one of the featured performers in the streaming documentary 'Homeschool Musical'. Bright will be playing the role of Nikki.
Lance Gross
Lance Darnell Kwaku Gross is a Ghanaian American actor, model and photographer. Gross was born in Oakland, California, the child of a Ghanaian immigrant father and African American mother and later moved to Las Vegas, Nevada. Gross began his career by modeling for Karl Kani and appearing in music videos for artists such as Mary J. Blige, Rihanna and Mariah Carey. In 2006, he had minor roles in 'Eve and The Bernie Mac Show'. It was while he was performing in the Tasha Smith Acting Studio that he was discovered by Tyler Perry. 2008 saw Gross make his film debut in the romantic comedy 'Meet the Browns'. His next big-screen appearance was in 'Our Family Wedding' in 2010. He won four NAACP Image Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his role on 'Tyler Perry’s House of Payne'. Gross also is the creator, producer and star of the digital series 'I Turned My Camera On', which combines his love of photography with a series of celebrity interviews. Gross plays Tyrique Freeman in 'Our Kind of People'.
Rhyon Nicole Brown
Rhyon Nicole Brown is an American actress, singer, and dancer. Rhyon is the younger sister of R&B singer RaVaughn. She made her film debut in 'Santa & Pete' in 1999 and has since appeared in various television shows. Brown has had recurring roles on shows such as 'That's So Raven' as Madison, on 'Judging Amy' as Rebecca Van Exel, and most recently a starring role on the ABC Family TV series 'Lincoln Heights' as Lizzie Sutton. Rhyon Nicole Brown was featured in FOX’s 'Empire' as Maya, a highly trained ballerina and vocalist with a flare for getting what she wants. This fall, she will star in the cable telefilm 'A Christmas Stray'. Brown will be playing the role of Lauren Dupont in 'Our Kind of People'.
