LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle took a "freedom flight" to California in 2020 to stay at Tyler Perry's mansion, but they now revealed they had never met the Hollywood billionaire before moving in. Fans slammed the couple, with many accusing them of selling Perry a sob tale in exchange for a plane ride and a place to stay.

In Episode 6 of Netflix's 'Harry & Meghan' docuseries, which was broadcast on Thursday, December 15, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex recounted their falling out with the royal family and subsequent departure from the UK with Perry's assistance. "This is the current situation," Harry can be seen on his phone recording. "Thanks to another amazing friend who we’ve never met, but who believes in us and wants to help." Although viewers were impressed by Perry's generosity, many were upset that the pair took advantage of his kindness.

Perry revealed in an interview that following Meghan's father Thomas' paparazzi controversy, he wrote Meghan a note "praying for her just to be able to move through it and hold on" just before the couple's 2018 royal wedding. "I had never met him before," Meghan said, stating that the 'Diary of a Mad Black Woman' actor claimed in his letter that he would always be there for her if she needed anything. The 'Suits' alum called Perry from Canada for the first time, and it was the first time they had ever talked. "I was just a wreck," she said, adding, "I was just crying and crying. Sometimes it’s easier to just open up to someone who knows nothing at all, and that was that moment with me and Tyler."

The 'Madea' franchise star housed the couple in his $18M residence with full protection to ensure their safety. "It was bliss because no one knew we were there," Harry said, adding that they enjoyed a "slice of normal life." When residing at Perry's house for six weeks, the couple constructed a fence around the property to keep the paparazzi out after the location was revealed.

Slamming the couple for "mooching off" Perry, a Redditor commented, "I can't get over the fact that MM (in true damsel grifter fashion) phoned Tyler Perry (whom she'd only spoken to on the phone once before) and basically gave him a sob story, so she could mooch a private jet flight and a place to stay. Viewers on Twitter didn't hold back either, with one mocking Meghan replacing her father with Perry, "Harry is outraged his grandmother delayed meeting him for a week. Meanwhile Meghan to her father - don’t bother calling me for the rest of my life, I’m washing my hair permanently. Oh and I’ve adopted the billionaire Tyler Perry as my new dad." Another viewer added, "Tyler Perry calling Meghan a classy and elegant woman is the joke of the century." One netizen also tweeted, "Harry and Meghan really japad to the US with zero plans in motion. Thank God for Tyler Perry." Another viewer quipped, "Harry saw tyler perry’s place and said 'oh this is NOICE. let’s stay here forever'. meghan: 'honey, we need to get our own place.' harry: 'we have a perfect house here.'"

The first three episodes of 'Harry & Meghan' aired on December 8 as part of the Sussexes' multi-million dollar deal with Netflix, with the last three hour-long episodes premiering on December 15.
