Sorn ‘Sharp Objects’: Release date, concept and all about her 1st solo comeback

MEAWW: Congratulations on your comeback! ‘Sharp Objects’ is quite different from your upbeat and peppy debut ‘RUN’. What made you want to go for the dance music genre?

SORN: I wanted to challenge myself with my first release as a solo artist and that was why I fell in love with 'Sharp Objects' right away. I really wanted to show my audience an honest and more courageous side of me when it comes to my music.

MEAWW: Fans love the dark route you took for ‘Sharp Objects’. What inspired you?

SORN: First of all, I’m really glad that all of my fans like this new look on me. I wanted to do something completely different from what I have done in the past. I wanted to show my fans a new side of me that I feel like I’ve never expressed before musically. The lyrics themselves are quite intense and dark so I wanted to create this new character that will fit the vibe of the song. I love this character of a woman who is daring and is not scared to fall in love even though she knows that her affection towards this one person can be as dangerous as playing with 'sharp objects’ and she still decides to do it anyway.

MEAWW: The music video for ‘Sharp Objects’ looks so cool. Are there any fun behind-the-scenes stories while filming?

SORN: The funny part was when we started filming the first scene for the day which was the stairs scene, I was very nervous and also no one really knew what to expect since it was my first time working with everyone. After shooting the first scene, I heard all my staff swearing really loud on the side and I really couldn’t tell whether I did a good job or did I not perform well. I went quiet for a little bit and then everyone started clapping and cheering for me. I felt like a whole weight was lifted off my chest and that scene really set the mood for the whole shoot.

MEAWW: Fans love that the concept is quite similar to the aesthetic of the HBO show ‘Euphoria’. How do you feel about that?

SORN: I personally really like the show 'Euphoria'. I saw lots of viral clips going around on TikTok so I decided to watch the show and found a lot of similarities with the whole concept whether it’s make-up or clothing. Even the intensity of the storyline of the show was as intense as the lyrics of 'Sharp Objects'. Even though the similarities I felt were coincidental, I was still glad that we decided to release this song during this time.

MEAWW: You have lately been spending a lot of time in the studio according to your posts. Can we expect a full-length album soon?

SORN: I wouldn’t say a full-length album just yet. But I did record a couple of songs back in LA and those are all pretty much ready to be released. The goal for this year is to have enough songs so that I can travel around the world, connect with my fans while performing new songs. Hopefully, we’ll be able to do that when the situation with Covid gets better.

MEAWW: What kind of genre or concept would you like to try next?

SORN: I would love to try R&B next. I always wanted to release an R&B song but I feel like as an artist, I still need to work on my vocal and the proper groove to prepare my vocals for this new genre.

MEAWW: Last year, you worked with the likes of Emily Mei and Amber Liu. Who would you like to collaborate with next?

SORN: I’m currently working on a few collaborative projects with close friends inside and outside of K-pop. I feel like when it comes to collaboration, it really could be with all types of artists depending on our cohesion to make great music together. There are definitely a few surprise projects coming this year.

MEAWW: You are pretty hands-on from making your own music to TikTok and YouTube videos. What got you into content creation and producing?

SORN: I use content creation as my outlet of expression daily. I feel like the content creation side of me allows me to constantly show a true side to myself, and definitely keeps me on the creative grind. I honestly, just really enjoy TikTok videos (watching and creating).

MEAWW: Fans love your fun TikTok videos. Can we expect a cool TikTok dance challenge or trend for ‘Sharp Objects’?

SORN: Yes, definitely! But we also will try to just have fun with the sound and can’t wait to see how people find a way to use it.

MEAWW: You have dabbled in everything from radio and podcasts to TikTok. What kind of project would you like to try next? Maybe acting?

SORN: I would love to tap into acting. I used to be someone who always said that I will never start acting but I feel like after discovering TikTok, my perspective has changed a lot. I have more confidence in expressing myself and I can confidently say that I am very comfortable showing my different facial expressions to the world now. So if there is any opportunity in the future, I would definitely want to start acting too.

MEAWW: We are eager to see you perform live. Any plans for a concert or maybe even a tour anytime soon?

SORN: I would definitely love to do a tour soon! But for now, I feel like creating more songs first, then hopefully I can look at doing an actual tour. Hopefully, when Covid gets better, I’d love to visit the Philippines.

MEAWW: Finally, any last words for the fans who have been waiting for you?

SORN: Stay tuned for a LOT of music over the next couple of months, and I’m so grateful for the support of everyone listening in and supporting the journey.
