Different music industries have artists promoting their new releases in different ways. In Thailand, we have actors performing their OSTs (original soundtracks), while in India, songs gain popularity by being featured in a Bollywood movie. In the West, artists have interviews and radioplays. But in K-pop, things are done a bit differently. Along with interviews, radioplays and concerts, K-pop music shows exist. And now we have none other than Adele promoting her latest single ‘Easy On Me’ on Music Core.

K-pop music shows are an easy way for artists to promote their newly released music to the general public. The allure is seen through several performances, set props and new outfits which aren’t really seen in the music videos. Fans also get to attend these music shows for free and hype up their favorites through ‘fanchants’ and lightsticks. Along with it, good-natured competition is fostered as the music shows tally certain criteria like sales, views and votes and the song with the most points wins a trophy that week.

Adele to appear on a K-pop music show

During the second generation of K-pop, when the Hallyu Wave was beginning to get strong, a lot of Western artists were introduced to the K-pop scene. From Usher and Christina Aguilera performing on Inkigayo to Lady Gaga on M Countdown, these performances are rare but possible. And now, it has been reported that after 6 years, Adele is set to release her new album ‘30’. The pre-released single ‘Easy On Me’ took the world by storm but she is not done with it yet. On November 12, it was reported that the British singer will be performing ‘Easy On Me’ on MBC’s music show, Music Core.

Her performance will be broadcast on November 27. And while fans are happy to see her, the unexpected appearance has everyone making memes on it. K-pop Twitter finds the whole thing hilarious and have taken to tweeting about it as if they would be hyping a K-pop idol like ‘Adele sunbaenim’. ‘Sunbaenim’ is Korean for ‘senior’ and a lot of junior artists call their seniors that when addressing them at places like music shows. And with the concept of music shows and senior titles being foreign in the Western music industry, fans are hilariously waiting for this clash of cultures.

'Adele sunbaenim hwaiting'

Fans have taken to making memes like, “Omg adele sunbaenim’s big debut on music core,” “Adele unnie Adele sunbaenim Adele comeback Adele first win,” and “And when she says adele imnida and all artists goes home and talks about adele sunbaenim.” This fan clubbed the hashtags that trend when an artist wins on music shows and the infamous cute actions that idols do when they end a performance, “And when adele sunbaenim gives us aegyo ending fairy? #ADELEFIRSTWIN #EASYONMEFIRSTWIN.” Another fan said, “Adele sunbaenim hwaiting,” which is a Korean term of encouragement. MCs also have to come up with clever ways to introduce the idols on the music show which has fan wondering if, “minju gonna be "hello adele sunbaenim from the oOOOTthheEEr sIIiDDddEEe.”
