Does Patricia Cornwell appear in ‘Scarpetta’? Episode 1 holds a surprise for fans

Patricia Cornwell's 'Scarpetta' novels are finally getting the small screen treatment with Prime Video's forensic crime thriller of the same name. Starring Nicole Kidman as the titular character, the latest series from showrunner Liz Sarnoff premiered on Wednesday.
And in what comes as a neat surprise for fans, Cornwall makes a cameo in the series. While authors or behind-the-lens names are making an appearance isn't novel, it always serves as a good Easter Egg, and in this case, was the perfect way to also pay a tribute to her scintillating work.
The crime procedural sees the author make an appearance in the very first episode, 'Bridge of Time, Part One'. For those who caught the episode: 13 minutes in. Kidman's Kay 'Scarpetta' is being re-sworn in as Virginia's chief medical officer after taking a leave of absence.
The high-ranking official swearing her in is played by none other than Cornwell. "Great," Scarpetta said. "Second time's the charm." The scene ends with Cornwell shaking her hand, saying, "Good luck, Dr. Scarpetta." The cameo isn't necessarily a miss-and-blink, as in director Joe Russo's 'Avengers: Endgame,' where he shares a scene with Chris Evans' Steve Rogers/Captain America.
Other major cameos include Norman Mailer on 'Gilmore Girls', and Diana Gabaldon in 'Outlander'. In related news, Cornwell shed light on her cameo. "They asked me if I would, and I was thrilled," she told Boston. "But it was nerve-wracking, I’ll tell you. I mean, good heavens, if you’re going to do a cameo, that’s a tough one, isn’t it? Standing there with Nicole Kidman?"
According to the Amazon MGM press release, "Scarpetta,' a chilling crime thriller that unfolds across two timelines. This dual narrative explores Kay Scarpetta’s journey from her beginnings as a Chief Medical Examiner in the late ’90s to her present-day return to her hometown, where she resumes her former position while investigating a grisly murder."
While busy investigating, Season 1 also sees 'Scarpetta' work through a complicated relationship with her sister Dorothy Farinelli (Jamie Lee Curtis), while secrets threaten to surface and destroy everything she’s worked for. The finale, however, leaves the door open for deeper investigation, heightening anticipation for Season 2.
Also starring in key roles alongside Kidman and Curtis are Bobby Cannavale as Detective Pete Marino, Simon Baker as FBI profiler Benton Wesley, and Ariana DeBose as Kay’s niece Lucy, reprise their roles.
The 90s timeline sees a change in cast with Rosy McEwen as Kay, Amanda Righetti as Dorothy, Jake Cannavale as Marino, and Hunter Parrish as Wesley. Developed and written for television by Liz Sarnoff, 'Scarpetta' Season 1 marks Kidman's first TV project in 2026.
The title is executive produced by Kidman, Per Saari, and Curtis through Comet Pictures. Jason Blum, Jeremy Gold, Chris Dickie, and Chris McCumber round out the list of EPs. David Gordon Green directed five episodes and also joins the roster of EPs alongside Amy Sayres. All eight episodes of 'Scarpetta' are available for streaming on Prime Video. The series has already been renewed for Season 2, with filming already underway.
