'Deadpool & Wolverine': All the times the film took playful dig at MCU
Contains spoilers for 'Deadpool & Wolverine'
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: 'Deadpool & Wolverine', the highly anticipated Marvel movie, hit theaters on Friday, July 26 bringing with it a whirlwind of excitement and irreverent humor.
And deliver it did, with a self-aware wit and humor that aims the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) itself, poking fun at its recent struggles and formulaic approach.
'Deadpool & Wolverine' is full of surprises, with laugh-out-loud moments and heartfelt quotes that will stick with you long after the credits roll. The film's sharp wit and unexpected humor make it a standout in the Marvel universe.
Who would have thought that a Disney-produced movie like 'Deadpool & Wolverine' would deliver some of the most memorable and hilarious one-liners? The film's irreverent humor and heartfelt moments make it a must-see, with quotes that will be remembered for years to come.
Here are a few times Deadpool made fun of his own franchise.
All the times Deadpool mocked the MCU in 'Deadpool & Wolverine'
1) "They’re gonna make him do this ‘till he’s 90"
Deadpool's signature style shines in 'Deadpool & Wolverine' with his trademark fourth-wall-breaking commentary and meta jokes. One joke that stands out is his quip about Disney keeping Hugh Jackman as Wolverine until he's 90 years old - a humorous jab that's probably closer to truth than we think!
The Multiverse has opened doors to nostalgic returns, like Michael Keaton reprising his role as Batman after 34 years. So, it's not far-fetched to imagine Disney bringing back Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, even if he's past his comfort zone.
Deadpool's joke might be a lighthearted jab, but it hints at the possibility of Disney's creative decisions.
2) "Welcome to the MCU, you're joining at a bit of a low point"
It's a dream come true to see Hugh Jackman reprise his iconic role as Wolverine in the MCU, 24 years after his debut in the Fox universe. But leave it to Deadpool to make the moment awkwardly hilarious, welcoming Wolverine with a wink and a nod to the MCU's current slump.
After years of Marvel's success, it's ironic that they've landed the legendary Wolverine during a lackluster Phase Five. Yet, 'Deadpool & Wolverine' shows Marvel's willingness to poke fun at itself, and we can't help but love it.
Maybe this is the turning point we've been waiting for. With Wolverine on board, the MCU just got a whole lot more interesting!
3) "There's only ever going to be one Blade"
In a surprise move, Wesley Snipes reprised his iconic role as Blade in the threequel, marking his return to the character after nearly two decades. Snipes first played Blade in the 1998 film 'Blade', followed by 'Blade II' in 2002 and 'Blade: Trinity' in 2004.
Snipes brought his signature style and humor to the cameo, including a memorable "ice skate uphill" line. One joke, however, seemed to hint at the upcoming MCU 'Blade' film.
When Snipes declares he's the only Blade, Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) looks directly at the camera, potentially acknowledging the character's future return. But given the long wait since the MCU 'Blade' announcement, the joke might be poking fun at the delay, suggesting Snipes might indeed be the only Blade after all.
Either way, it was thrilling to see Snipes back in action as the legendary vampire hunter.
Forget Marvel, Deadpool did not go easy on other superhero franchises either
1) "F**k you, Fox! I'm going to Disneyland!"
One of the movie's funniest moments comes when Wade Wilson (Deadpool) gets invited to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe via the TVA's Paradox. Deadpool's thrilled to escape his old universe, and Ryan Reynolds breaks the fourth wall, grabbing the camera and jokingly cursing out Fox for its past treatment of the characters.
Deadpool's eagerness to ditch Fox and join Disney's R-rated fold is hilarious, especially for those familiar with the behind-the-scenes drama surrounding 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine'.
Reynolds' lighthearted jab at Fox adds to the humor, making it a laugh-out-loud moment that pokes fun at the character's complicated history.
2) "The Cavill-rine"
Deadpool's search for the perfect Wolverine leads him to a variant with massive arms, reminiscent of Hugh Jackman's iconic physique. Noticing a familiar face, Deadpool quips that this Wolverine looks like Henry Cavill - and to our surprise, it is indeed Cavill playing the character!
The cameo is made even more enjoyable with Deadpool's nickname for him, "Cavillerine," and his comment about the fitting mutton chops. But what really steals the show is Deadpool's cheeky jab at the DC Universe for their handling of Cavill's Superman in films like 'Man of Steel' and 'Justice League'.
Unfortunately, this hilarious cameo is all too brief, leaving us wanting more of Cavill's Wolverine.
3) "You will be changing the hierarchy of power in the MCU"
After a brief encounter with the Time Variance Authority, Deadpool finds himself in need of a new Wolverine to replace the one who died in 'Logan'. When he spots the perfect candidate, he can't resist making a humorous comment about Wolverine shaking up the MCU's power dynamics.
This joke is especially funny given the recent DC Universe debacle surrounding 'Black Adam' and Dwayne Johnson's failed attempt to make it a franchise cornerstone. Johnson's promises of revolutionizing the DC Universe fell flat when the film bombed at the box office and was promptly scrapped from future plans.
Adding to the humor is the reported past tension between Reynolds and Johnson on the set of 'Red Notice', which might have influenced this clever jab.
