Covid in K-pop: NCT Jisung is first to fall sick among 23 members, fans wonder 'who jinxed it'

Fans were previously in awe that NCT, a 23-member group, did not have a single Covid-19 case among them since 2020 despite staying active

It truly seems like South Korea is the country of opposites when it comes to the pandemic. While the rest of the world was on lockdown in 2020, the country was running normally, for the most part, with even the K-pop industry booming with one or two cases being found in a week, and not more. However, with the Omicron strain, as the West opened up, we had almost 15-20 idols falling sick in a single day. More than 120 idols tested positive in February and over 100 idols got Covid-19 in March. But now that lockdowns are being implemented again, we only have a couple of cases in K-pop like that of EXO’s D.O and NCT’s Jisung.

South Korea and the K-pop industry have long been applauded for strictly dealing with the pandemic with repeated testing and self-quarantine procedures. In April, only 16 idols like EXO’s D.O, CNBLUE’s Minhyuk and TWICE’s Sana had tested positive for Covid-19. Many Knetizens were impressed that NCT, a 23-member group, that has been pretty active even during the pandemic's peak years, from 2020 to 2021, did not have a single case. But it looks like with all this talk, the run of luck was jinxed. Just before the month’s end, we have NCT’s Jisung becoming the first NCT member to get diagnosed with Covid-19.

Jisung becomes the first NCT member to get Covid-19

On April 30, SM Entertainment shared that NCT Dream had taken a preemptive rapid antigen test for a schedule on April 29. Jisung ended up testing positive while the rest of the members’ tests were negative. The label added that he had taken all three shots of the Covid-19 vaccine and did not have any extraordinary symptoms except for a mild sore throat. Jisung’s schedule is halted at the moment and he’s in self-isolation.

'Get well soon'

For the last few weeks, the general public was in awe as they realized that NCT had not gotten a single Covid-19 case in the last 2 years, and was constantly making posts about it. But with Jisung becoming the first of the 23-member group to fall sick, fans are making tweets like, “The amount of talks/articles about how nct is the only group who never have covid.... now yall definitely jinxed it 😵‍💫 anyway hoping for a speedy recovery for jisung! Gwsssss.” Another posted, “Whatt.. ok who jinxed it??”

One fan commented, “Jisung? get well soon. take care of your health, we are waiting for you here🙌 love youu.” Another said, “Park jisung get well soon, please take care of your health. u alr did your best, bub.” One fan added, “Jisung ~ Czennies will be praying for your speedy recovery. You are always reminding us that we need to take care of ourselves right? Pls you too, take care of yourself and get a lot of rest. Eat healthy foods and focus on recovering ~ We will be waiting for you, my love ♡.”
