'Beatbox': NCT Dream makes first-week sales record despite KTOWN4U messing up pre-orders

'Beatbox', the second best-selling repackaged K-pop album could have become first with million sales if KTOWN4U would have shipped all pre-orders

NCT Dream has proven that nothing can stand in their way as they are on a roll from becoming the youngest triple million sellers last year to once again breaking their own records with their latest albums. Previously, NCT Dream had become the first K-pop group to make over 500k sales for a repackaged album with ‘Hello Future’ in 2021. The group set the bar even higher as their second studio album ‘Glitch Mode’ amassed 1.12 million sales four days after its release in March. Without taking a break, they then announced its repackaged version ‘Beatbox’.

NCT Dream was set to become triple million sellers once more with ‘Beatbox’ crossing 1.4 million pre-orders. The repackaged album has the 11 tracks of ‘Glitch Mode’ and four new original songs. The retro reissue was released on May 30. NCT Dream’s album sold over 364k copies in the first 24 hours and crossed over 848k sales in its first week. ‘Beatbox’ is now the second repackaged K-pop album with the highest first-week sales following BTS’ ‘Love Yourself: Answer’ that had made 868k sales.

‘Beatbox’ is the second best-selling repackaged album

‘Beatbox’ also happens to be NCT Dream’s third best-selling album to date following ‘Glitch Mode’ that made 1.4 million sales in its first week and ‘Hot Sauce’ that crossed 1 million sales. But fans are impressed that ‘Beatbox’ still made a record of the second best-selling repackaged album despite a blunder by online store KTOWN4U. Fanbases often turn to the popular retailer store for group pre-orders to help albums chart in the first week as their efficiency help convert the pre-orders to actual sales quickly. The sales are then reflected for chart tracking and music show wins.

Unfortunately, for NCT Dream, this time, KTOWN4U could not uphold its promise as SM Entertainment withdrew a large number of albums due to poor quality. A total of eight Chinese fanbases had pre-ordered 300,000 copies of which KTOWN4U could only send 11,000 copies. The site shared that the actual sales from the pre-orders would be delayed and so would not reflect in the first-week sales. The Chinese fanbases calculated and came to the conclusion that had KTOWN4U shipped out all of their 300k pre-orders, the first-week sales of ‘Beatbox’ might have crossed 900k or even a million sales creating a new record.

‘Never seen a company hating their artist so bad’

One fan tweeted, “We could have the first if SM wasnt underproducing the album.” Another fan joked, “@SMTOWNGLOBAL never seen a company hating their artist so bad they literally praying day and night to make their money maker flop.” One added, “Now imagine if ktown reflected the 200k copies bought by the cbars :) beat box wouldve sold 1 million in the first week alrdy :) now imagine if sm never under stocked in the first place :).” Another commented, “THIS COULDVE BEEN A MILLION SELLER OK ITS FIRST WEEK IF SM DIDNT UNDERPRODUCED I HATE YOU PINK COMPANY anw stream and vote for beatbox!!!!!!!”
