Release date

The series premiere of 'Bargain Block' will air on Wednesday, April 24, at 9 pm ET/PT on HGTV.

Plot

Keith Bynum and Evan Thomas with help from their friend Shea Hicks-Whitfield buy as many rundown and abandoned houses as they can on a single block and then renovate them to make them appealing, yet affordable enough for buyers within the community. While working on each of the under-renovation properties, Keith, a designer, and Evan, a builder and carpenter, strip them to the studs to create affordable, stylish and fully furnished starter homes that are ideal for first-time homebuyers. As champions of the mantra, "everyone deserves good design", the duo infuses each renovation with artful and surprising aesthetics that uplift the homes and serve as an inspiration for other houses and homeowners on the block.

In the season’s first episode, Shea hosts an open house for Keith and Evan’s first overhauled property on the neighborhood block, while the pair starts their next renovation a few doors down. Keith and Evan fully restore a dilapidated two-bedroom property into a stunning home with a modern theme that features warm colors, cozy furnishings and a huge main bedroom. Next, they renovate a dark, dated three-bedroom house, giving it a mid-century vibe with colorful art and bold lighting on a shoestring budget.

Cast

Keith Bynum and Evan Thomas

The home flipping couple had stable jobs in Denver, Colorado, before they decided to pursue a career in real estate. Bynum developed an interest in carpentry and woodwork and started selling his creations on Craigslist. He later decided to buy a home in a remote Rocky Mountain town to renovate and flip it.

Thomas decided to join the business but didn't want to work with fussy Colorado clients and decided to move to a friendlier region, Detroit. They drove across the country to move to Detroit and invested in a house with no plumbing, barely working electrical and an unusable kitchen. In a month they fixed it up and sold it and things have only looked up since then.

The couple buys houses that require a lot of work for as little as $1000 and convert it into a livable space, all by themselves. They are not above cheap and affordable fixtures and materials required to build the house back up from scratch and believe that money shouldn't stop people from having a great house. They are also the owners of Nine Furniture and Design, a furniture store in Ferndale. The couple only hires local workers to help them in the home building process. “We live in the neighborhood we work in and try to hire only in the city,” Bynum says. “Detroit has been so kind and generous to us. We don’t want to be looked at like we’re plundering and pillaging Detroit," he added.
