'Rock the Block' Episode 3: Who won the main suite challenge? Here's how teams got creative with rooms

With the kitchen, master suite and living room down, the teams of 'Rock the Block' season 2 are all gunning for the next big win — the basement. After last week's episode, 'Rock the Main Bedrooms', Alison Victoria and Mike Holmes scored their second win of the season and earned a cash bonus of $3,000, which helped up their budget.

This week, the teams had to renovate the basement — 'Rock the Basement'. And as always, there was a twist. The teams were presented with 'The Heavy Metal Challenge', where they had to use a piece of scrap metal as part of their design. This week, the judge was none other than Tamara Day, the host of 'Bargain Mansions'.

Brian and Mika Kleinschmidt

Basement Budget: $55,000

Having lost the previous challenge, the Kleinschmidt's were determined to create a space that truly let them be creative so that their design sense wouldn't be written off as 'safe'. The couple decided to install a two-lane bowling alley in the basement, along with a bar, making it the ultimate game room. They also opened out the basement to add a mother-in-law suite, complete with a full bathroom that has a dual entry, allowing you to access it from the bedroom and the game room. Day was visibly impressed with all it and mentioned that for a family with kids, such as hers, the bowling-alley would be a hit. However, appraising a bowling alley was not easy in the larger scheme of things.

Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent

Basement Budget: $40,000

Berkus and Brent have been known to spend quite a bit on each room. However, for the basement, the couple thought about a way to create a space that would not only add value, but bring in passive income too. The couple created a two-bedroom, one-bath rental space, effectively turning the house from a four-bedroom home to a six-bedroom home. One of the basement bedrooms even had a Murphy bed, allowing the space to double up as a home office. With salvaged countertops and a kitchen as well, the couple pitched the basement as a space that could be rented out, allowing the homeowners to make additional income.

Alison Victoria and Mike Holmes created a space that included a gaming area, complete with a ping pong table and a bar. They also had a cozy movie room, allowing people to use the basement as a recreational space. They also incorporated a home office. The pair also added another room downstairs, with the highlight being a walk-in closet. While Day loved the space overall, she felt as though the use of carpet was a big no.

David Bromstad and Tiffany Brooks

Basement Budget:$35,000

The duo that's never afraid to take risks, David Bromstad and Tiffany Brooks did not have an easy week, seeing that Tiffany was not present for most of the challenge, on account of a prior engagement that she had to attend. Bromstad did have some help, seeing that Blake, the project manager on the show stepped in for Brooks. Bromstad, as always went down the colorful road. The team created a soft blush pink colored basement space, with two bedrooms, a bar area and a theatre room. They even had a blush pink ping pong table to match!

Tamara Day had a hard time picking a winner and it seemed like a close call between Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent, going up against the Kleinschmidt's. But the undisputed winner proved to be Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent, seeing that they created a completely new rental space below. Even the other teams were in a bit of shock and awe, seeing just how smartly they planned their space. With an additional $4000 added to their budget, the couple was just as excited as ever.

With only two weeks to go, the race is on to see which team bags this season's win!

Catch Season 2 of 'Rock The Block' every Monday at 9 pm ET/PT on HGTV and you can stream the same on Discovery+.
