Astro’s MJ becomes 1st K-pop idol to win ‘The Trot Show’ as he gets his first solo win

MJ is the first Astro member to go solo as he released his trot single album 'Happy Virus'

On November 29, not only did Astro’s MJ get his first solo win it was also pretty historic. Arohas (Astro’s fandom) were pretty excited when it was announced that the oldest of Astro would become the first member to go solo. While MJ has shown off his 4D personality with his variety show hosting and has acted in musicals, he had yet to debut as a soloist. But his love for the trot genre was evident when his first solo song for Astro’s concert was a trot song. 

Following that, he was also part of the trot group Super Five along with idols like Pentagon’s Hui and A Cian’s Hyukjin. MJ had participated in the trot survival show ‘Favorite Entertainment’ in 2020 which ended up forming the project group with the winners. Hence, it wasn’t surprising for Astro fans when it was announced that MJ’s solo debut album ‘Happy Virus’ would be of the trot genre.

MJ wins on ‘The Trot Show’

Having roped in the likes of trot legendary singer Young-tak and child singer Kim Tae-yeon, MJ released the album and its title track ‘Get set yo’ on November 3. And like the usual K-pop music shows where K-pop artists perform their new releases, we had MJ promoting ‘Get set yo’ on SBS’ ‘The Trot Show’. We’ve had K-pop idols like BTOB’s Sungjae, Girls’ Generation’s Taeyeon and Seventeen’s Seungkwan who have proved themselves as trot singers. But to date, no K-pop idol has won ‘The Trot Show’. Well, that changed with Astro.

On November 30, MJ won first place on SBS ‘The Trot Show’ with 7,579 points. The Astro member was up against popular trot artists Park Goon and Lee Chan-won. This is MJ’s first solo win. It also makes him the first K-pop idol to win on ‘The Trot Show’. We also had the leader of Astro, JinJin congratulating MJ on the win.

Happy fans trended #ASTRO and #MJ as they celebrated the win. They made memes and tweets like, “Me tonight sleeping peacefully knowing mj is the first kpop idol who won in trot show,” “ROHAS ARE Y'ALL SEEING THIS?? #GetSetYo FIRST WIN!! #MJ IS THE FIRST KPOP IDOL WHO WON THE TROT SHOW AWARD!! I'M SO PROUD OF Y'ALL! WE MADE IT,” and “Congratulations #MJ for winning The Trot Show for this month! The first idol who won this show ㅠㅠ #계세요 FIRST WIN!! We're so proud of you MJ, you deserve that trophy.” Another Aroha shared, “I SERIOUSLY STOPPED BREATHING.” One fan posted, "9 GROUP TROPHIES 1 SUB UNIT TROPHY 1 SOLO TROPHY 8 trophies from 2021 alone! Please pat yourselves, you've worked hard. Cheers to more wins!"
