Despite its initial cancellation after one season on Showtime, 'American Rust', the crime drama starring Jeff Daniels, has found a new home on Amazon's Freevee platform for a second season.

Releasing on Thursday, March 28, the series follows a world-weary police chief in a small Pennsylvania town as he investigates a brutal murder.

Drawing inspiration from Philipp Meyer's novel of the same name, 'American Rust' weaves a gritty crime narrative against the backdrop of a deteriorating former steel town.

The show skillfully utilizes its setting to comment on rural America's challenges.

What happened in 'American Rust' Season 1?

In the debut season of 'American Rust', Police Chief Del investigates the death of corrupt officer Steve Novick.

The prime suspect, Billy Poe, turns out to be innocent, and Del discovers it was Billy's friend Isaac who committed the murder.

Novick was involved in drug dealings with Bobby Jesus and Jackson Berg. In the finale, Del shoots and stages a scene to cover up the deaths of Bobby and Jackson. However, he accidentally encounters an elderly woman in the cabin, killing her too.

Back in prison, Billy faces a brutal assault by members of the Aryan Nation. Hospitalized in a medically induced coma, his potential release, once on the horizon, becomes uncertain, deeply affecting Grace.

This heart-wrenching moment becomes a breaking point for Grace, who was on the verge of reuniting with her son.

Now, uncertain if Billy will survive, she reluctantly supports Del's reckless actions.

The finale takes a dark turn as Del, questioned by detectives about Chuck's death, lies about the suicide.

Del's blatant disregard for the truth signifies his embrace of immorality and lawlessness, making him a formidable character.

Interrupting the interrogation, Isaac returns, intending to confess. Del, revealing a wrench used in the murder, instructs Isaac to conceal it.

The season concludes with Del at a critical juncture, his actions pointing towards a point of no return.

In Season 2, Del is poised to face the consequences of his choices, leaving viewers on edge about the potential harm he might cause in covering up his tracks.

What is the plot of 'American Rust: Broken Justice'?

In the upcoming season of 'American Rust', the aftermath of Del's justified triple homicide and Deputy Park's growing suspicion of him will be central themes.

Park is poised to play a more prominent role as the skeptical cop trailing the man he believes committed the murders.

Season 2 will delve into the repercussions of Grace's unsuccessful attempt to unionize the mill and her puzzling choice to burn down her own home in a bid to get closer to Del. The narrative will unravel the consequences of these decisions.

The fate of wrongly convicted Billy Poe, left in a coma after a prison beating, hangs in the balance. Season 2 is expected to address his situation and provide a resolution for the character.

Furthermore, the storyline will shift as Del investigates a series of murders hinting at a larger violent conspiracy. This new arc promises to add depth and intrigue to the unfolding narrative in 'American Rust: Broken Justice'.
