BRENTWOOD, CALIFORNIA: The Top 12 of Season 21 of 'American Idol' sang songs by performers inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on April 30, 2023. Haven Madison took the stage to sing a Bon Jovi classic, but many were dissatisfied with her "karaoke-like" performance, with many blaming her father for forcing his ambition onto his daughter.

Haven is not the only talented musician in her family. her father Jason Roy is the main vocalist of the Christian rock band Building 429. Jason and his former bassist Scotty Beshears founded the band in 1999 in Fayetteville, North Carolina. They are well-known for singles such as 'Where I Belong' and 'Fear No More'. The name of the band comes from Ephesians chapter four, verse 29. In 2019, the band established their own independent record label called 3rd Wave Music and began releasing their music through it. The lineup has changed multiple times, but Jason has remained constant. He also played the guitar to assist his daughter during her audition performance of 'Fifteen'.

Haven takes on Bon Jovi

With the Bon Jovi hit 'Livin' On a Prayer', Haven revealed a new side of herself. As a child, her father exposed her to Bon Jovi. He assisted her in making the arrangement. Adam Lambert, the Sunday episode's coach, advised her to let her technique "go a little bit" and let loose. Haven gave the song her own take, reducing it and giving it a current pop edge. She put down the instruments and worked the stage like a veteran.

Judge Katy Perry told Haven, "You've traded in your Flintstones vitamins for confidence vitamins!" Luke Bryan described her as a "massive star" and a major "step-out moment." Haven's confidence, according to Lionel Richie, is "staring us in the face."

'Over the Haven and famous dad thing'

Soon after Haven's performance, viewers on Twitter asked, "Yall didn't think Haven sounded like a karaoke version??"

Another person asked, "Haven what was that?" Blaming the judges for pushing Haven, a fan wrote, "Judges trying to get the audience to love Haven. She’s better when she sings her own music. Otherwise she is karaoke." A fourth person commented, "Tyson and Haven both had "nice" voices but you can easily hear that neither really has much power in their voices. Just the tricks."

Comparing her to former Idol contestant Hunter Girl, one wrote, "These @AmericanIdol judges are really trying to make Haven happen. She’s the Hunter Girl of this season. Mediocre voice but they think if they say she’s a star enough ppl won’t care about her voice."

Calling out the production, one also wrote, "Haven definitely getting special treatment? Like wth."

On Reddit, viewers shared their strong opinions on the performance too. One wrote, "Oh hell no, Haven is not allowed to touch Bon Jovi." Some fans also sympathize with her as they feel, "I used to hate Haven but now I kind of feel bad for her. That scene made me really uncomfortable and like this is her dad's dream and not hers."

Another chimed in, "100%." Asking her dad to go away, one wrote, "I'm tired of seeing Haven's dad, go away immediately sir." "I'm over the Haven and famous dad thing," wrote another. One person also quipped, "Another appearance by Mr. Haven Madison. If he's gotta be there he better cry."

'American Idol' Season 21 airs every Sunday and Monday at 8 pm ET on ABC.
