Grammys 2022: BTS to perform 3rd time in a row, fans say ‘doing charity for the sh*t show’
BTS is arguably the most popular K-pop group at the moment. This is evident from them breaking records and getting recognition from their home country, as well as the rest of the world. They made history in K-pop award shows from winning the most Daesangs (grand prizes) at MAMA and MMA to being the most awarded group at the MTV EMAs and becoming the first Korean act to win AMAs’ ‘Artist Of The Year’. And now, they have been invited to the 64th Grammy Awards.
On March 15, the Recording Academy announced their performance lineup and it includes the likes of Western popstars Olivia Rodrigo, Billie Eilish and Lil Nas X. Along with them, we also have BTS performing at the 2022 Grammys for the third time in a row. But ARMY (BTS’ fandom) and the American music award show have a love-hate relationship. While it is an honor for an artist to be recognized by the Grammys, fans feel that the award show is using BTS for clout. Despite breaking several records and beating Western artists on American charts like Billboard, they have been again and again snubbed.

BTS nominated for the second time
BTS’ art director was nominated in 2019 for the ‘Best Recording Package’ while the boy group was invited as award presenters. In 2020, BTS shared the stage with Lil Nas X for ‘Old Town Road’ and became the first K-pop performer at the Grammys. They then became the first K-pop act to be nominated for ‘Best Pop Duo/Group’ at the 2021 Grammys and performed ‘Dynamite’ as well. For the upcoming 2022 edition, BTS is nominated in the same category again and will have their first solo in-person stage.
While these are all causes for celebration, fans feel that the Grammys give BTS little to no screentime, have them in the end and give the awards to lesser successful nominees but use BTS’ name to have viewers tuning in to watch the award show. Fans have been trending #Scammy to show their displeasure. However, positive ARMY are seeing the Grammy as a pit stop since the boy group is set to perform at their sold-out concerts in Las Vegas, at an arena larger than the venue hosting the 2022 Grammys.
'If you hold them hostage'
One fan joked, “Watch bts' live after their grammy performance get more views than the actual award show.” Another ARMY added, “Bts is going to turn the gr4mmys into their own little concert and then armys will proceed to watch them in that same arena while they perform in a sold out stadium like it's just another friday for them, i smile.” One fan shared, "And i have ZERO expectations from grammy this year. i know bts deserve that award 200% but they won't give it to them."

One tweeted, “BTS really treats Grammy as a pit stop for their stadium concert, like even if they wouldn't win their nomination, they will still be the talk of the town for at least a month. It's insane how BTS will always be the main character in the global music industry.” Another fan posted, “Doing charity for the shit show. will be tuning in for them only.” One ARMY commented, “Not a single hit tweet about rain on me winning a grammy a year ago, all tweets are about Dynamite and BTS sharing them getting their 1B Spotify Plaque today just proves again who is the real winner.”

Another pointed out how the show was using BTS’ Butter’, “BTS is up for a Grammy again this year. CBS is promoting the Grammys using the BTS song "Butter" with clips of them and other celebrities. They will use BTS again this year, just like they did last year, to build viewers/ratings and will no doubt then snub them again.” One fan warned, “Only watching the boys then I'm out. If you hold them hostage til the end we will make you suffer.”
