The 70s and the 80s were considered to be golden years for the genre of horror. From ‘The Exorcist’ to ‘Poltergeist’, which was the era of nerve-wracking horror movies that made everyone feel miserable. In 1987, iconic director John McTiernan blended the genre of horror with sci-fi and came out with a movie titled ‘Predator’. The movie had two big names such Arnold Schwarzenegger and Carl Weathers in pivotal roles. Although the movie received mixed reviews when it opened, ‘Predator’ has gone on to gain the status of a “cult classic” and is considered to be one of the finest sci-fi/horror movies.

The original movie spawned several sequels and spin-off movie that continued to scare the fans over the years. However, they couldn’t manage to reach the level of the 1987 movie. Almost 40 years after the original ‘Predator’ movie, we are going to see how the deadly alien creature made its way to planet Earth for the time ever in Dan Trachtenberg’s ‘Prey’. Set almost 300 years before the events of the first ‘Predator’ movie, the movie chronicles the journey of the Comanche tribe and how they came in contact with the alien. It is the survival of the fittest as the ruthless Comanche warriors go up against the highly-advanced creature.

'Alien' (1979)

Directed by the legendary filmmaker Ridley Scott, ‘Alien’ is a great reminder of how we should not be happy about “not being alone” in the universe. The movie primarily focuses on the man-hunting extra-terrestrial creature that attacks the crew of a ship. The biggest selling point of this movie is how deeply unsettling it is because of its setting. The movie is considered to be one of the greatest movies ever made and set a benchmark for the horror genre. ‘Alien’ went on to earn more than $106 million globally on a production budget of just $11 million. It also won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects in 1980. All in all, ‘Alien’ is one movie that changed the genre completely.

When the movie was released in 2002, no one had many expectations from it. However, ‘Signs’ did not only exceed all the expectations but also went on to become one of the finest sci-fi horror movies of all time. Directed by M Night Shyamalan, the movie follows the journey of a family living on a farm and finding mysterious crop circles, also known as “signs." The movie, starring Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix in pivotal roles, didn’t waste too much time in talking about alien life and focused on the fear instilled in humans by something that’s unknown to us. Although the movie didn’t receive favorable reviews from critics, ‘Independence Day’ is still considered to be one of the few movies that changed the genre of sci-fi movies in Hollywood. Helmed by Roland Emmerich, the film explores an alien invasion that threatens all humanity and how different nations come together to defeat the enemy. For the most part, the main characters of the movie try to understand how to overcome this challenge, but in the end, it is all about regaining freedom from the clutches of the extern-terrestrial life. The 1996 movie also gave everyone an idea of how advanced these alien creatures might be and why sending out signals to contact them might turn out to be dangerous for humanity. ‘Independence Day’ earned a whopping $817.4 million globally, making it one of the biggest movies of all time.
