'You' Season 2 Episode 9: Joe tries to retrace his steps from the previous night to prove that he is innocent
In the latter half of Season 2 of 'You', the thing Joe's been dreading most actually happens. After a night of LSD-induced misadventures, Joe returns to his storage facility to find Delilah lying in a pool of her own blood, her throat slit. Even worse? He can't remember how it happened, especially considering his promises to her to let her go.
But, Joe is convinced that he did not do it — after all, he's told himself that he doesn't survive Love if he did kill Delilah. And so, Joe attempts to retrace his steps through the night to figure out who might have killed her, even if it is him.
Joe also feels immense guilt when it comes to Ellie, and it gets worse when Ellie comes to him looking for Delilah while showing him the death threats her sister has gotten over the whole Henderson issue.
Over the course of the episode, Joe continues to get visions of what happened the previous night. So, his first stop is Anavrin and asks Calvin as to what might have happened, so he can "find his wallet". Calvin tells him that Forty was with him.
From there, Joe realizes that he had bought food for Delilah, and he figures since the food wasn't in the storage facility, he must have gone somewhere else. So he head's to Forty's place. There, he sees Love and Forty's mom who is trying to ensure that Forty's confession about the au pair will not go beyond Joe.
He tries to ask Forty what happened after Anavrin. But Forty tells him that he had spent the rest of the night with Candace after Joe "booty-called" Delilah. By now, Joe is worried that he might have killed Delilah after all.
Joe feels terrible, both about Delilah's death and because of his concern for Ellie. Candace in the meantime goes looking for Delilah and finds Joe's storage facility. She finds Joe there, pepper sprays him and locks him in his own glass cabin.
Worse, she brings Love to the cage to prove to her how deranged Joe actually is. But Love just tells Candace to get Joe out of the cage and calls the latter crazy. At this point, Joe finally tells Love that Candace is telling the truth and confesses to everything.
Love runs out and Candace follows her. Then, Love stabs Candace in the neck with a broken bottle, killing her. Love then goes back to Joe and tells him that she "took care of" Candace, and for the first time, Joe looks on with fear in his eyes.
Candace visits Forty in the midst of all this and tries to open his eyes to the truth in Beck's story and what Joe is really capable of. This leads him to start thinking for himself and he looks up Nicky.
We finally get the idea that not all is what it seems. The season has been peppering clues as to how different Love is from Beck and that Joe may, in fact, be quite mistaken with his assessment of her. We're disappointed in Candace's death since it means an end to the one person who is aware of Joe's crimes.
With one episode remaining in the season, a lot of questions are left to be answered. But whether Joe will find the happiness he wanted, that still remains doubtful.
