'You' Season 2 Episode 5 reveals how Candace escaped Joe even as family takes center stage amid tense situations
In the fifth episode of 'You', Candace returns to unleash mayhem for Joe, but this time, she takes a page out of Joe's playbook.
Meet Amy Adam. Readers of Caroline Kepnes' 'Hidden Bodies' will know the name. In the books, Joe meets Amy after the events of the first book (when he killed Beck) and nearly falls in love with her.
That is until Amy steals the rare books from Mooney's and runs to Los Angeles. Joe's reason for moving to Los Angeles in the books is to follow Amy, retrieve the books, and obviously, kill her.
Candace has taken on the name of Amy and is now Forty's girlfriend. She tells Joe that she is there to keep the Quinns safe from Joe, but Joe believes that she is there to hurt him.
And though Candace tries her best to get into Joe's head, he still comes out on top when they accompany their respective beaus (Forty and Love) to the latter's parents' vow renewal.
There, Joe learns that Love has issues with her parents, specifically her mother. When Love's mother slaps her, Joe confides in her that his dad used to beat him and this leads to the two bonding over their messed up relationships with their parents.
Of course, Forty is dealing with his own mess too — he is ignored and belittled by his father, causing him to fall off the wagon again. This time, he creates a ruckus during the renewal ceremony, leading to his mother blaming Love for not looking after him.
Over the course of the episode, we also see flashbacks from Candace's perspective as she relives the trauma of dealing with Joe. We see that when she told Joe that she does not love him, he attacked her and when he presumed her to be dead, he buried her.
Of course, Candace makes it out and though she tries to file a complaint with the police, they say nothing can be done without proof or evidence. The most she can do is file a restraining order that might stay for a maximum of three years. This is why she chose to disappear.
Though 'You' paints Candace as mostly an unlikeable character, we feel she is one of the most morally sound, for having the courage to stand up to Joe and even choose to return to save the Quinns.
Meanwhile, Henderson's death reverberates through this episode. Delilah and Ellie are at a bad place in their relationship, unable to talk to each other about what Henderson did to them. However, by the end of the episode, the two reconcile and comfort each other.
The biggest twist in the episode is when Forty reveals what he has chosen to adopt for his movie — Beck's book, which Candace gave him.
This could only mean that Candace has not given up and is willing to play the long game in order to beat Joe. All episodes of Season 2 of 'You' are now streaming on Netflix.
