Spoilers for 'Yellowstone' Season 3 Episode 5 'Cowboys and Dreamers'

'Yellowstone' did a cold open tonight by answering one of the most pressing questions fans have had since the show started - why does Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) hate her elder brother Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley).

To say that the two have had a love-hate relationship doesn't cut it, they have gone beyond their limits to belittle and berate the other and until now viewers of the show had no idea why two siblings could possibly hate each other so much. In Season 3 Episode 5, it is revealed with a flashback scene. Kylie Rogers, Dalton Baker and Kyle Red Silverstein reprise the adolescent versions of Beth, Jamie and Rip respectively. And what Taylor Sheridan reveals this episode is heartbreaking.

When Beth finds out she is pregnant, she seeks help from Jamie, who takes her to the free clinic on the reservation. There, he is warned that Beth will be sterilized and won't just abort the baby. He still goes ahead with it without telling her the truth.

And so it begins.

Even though fans of the show had long theorized that this would be their backstory, they are shocked.

"I knew it!  Poor Beth," tweeted a fan. "Damn...the big reveal is in the opening scene!! Flashback time!!" added another. "So Beth can't have kids because of Jamie....holy s**t," concurred another fan. Many fans are asking Jamie why he would even make such a decision for someone else. "CALLED IT. Young Beth was pregnant and went to Jamie for help. He took her to a clinic where she would be sterilized when she had an abortion. And now she hates him. Which is 100% fair. What the f**k Jamie? #YellowstoneTV"

Add to that the fact that he never told his younger sister what she was getting into, his sister who trusted him with what was a life-altering decision. The reveal also has many fans hating him just like Beth does. "Ooooo my God!!!!!!! Thats why she's sterile!!!! Oh i would sooooo hate jamie for that!! Beth got right for that."

"Jamie is a piece of sh*t and now I'm said for Rip and super sad for Beth," another agreed.

But no matter the anger, fans of the show are heartbroken for Beth. "It's been 5 minutes and my heart is already breaking," tweeted a fan with a crying emoji.

"Poor Beth putting all her trust in her brother only for him to do that to her! She has every right to have the hate that she does towards him!" added another fan.

'Yellowstone' airs Sundays at 9 pm ET/ PT on Paramount Network.
