‘Work In Progress’ Episode 7 Review: Abby ends up hurting Chris as insecurity gets the better of her again

After contemplating for a while if she should own up to Chris about discovering his ‘dead name’, Abby finally spills the truth, which only ends up hurting Chris.

Ever since Abby found out Chris’ ‘dead name’, though mistakenly, she has been in an emotional spiral. She has been fighting within herself constantly and questioning her judgment whether she should tell Chris about her discovery or not. This puts her under tremendous duress, so much so that she goes back to her ‘stress eating’ and pondering over her actions. She also starts avoiding Chris, perhaps because of her guilt or probably because she doesn’t know how to face him with the truth. In the meantime, she ends up revealing what she did and how she feels about it to Julia Sweeney and Campbell.

While we do understand sharing such things with a best friend, it might have been a bit too over-the-top to talk about your relationship mistakes with someone you barely know. However, both Julia and Campbell suggest the same solution to Abby. They encourage her to be truthful to Chris and own up to her mistakes, but Abby sees it otherwise.

After all, that was the only boundary that he had drawn with Abby and she broke it. But as luck would have it, the inevitable happens. Despite trying hard to keep Chris at bay, Abby and Chris end up face to face and in a trance, Abby tells him the truth, which, needless to say, breaks Chris’ heart. Chris might not have felt so hurt had not Abby gone around telling people about what she did instead of telling her boyfriend. His only contention was that he had asked for only one promise from Abby and she failed it.

What Abby did might not have been right, but it was an accident. She was drunk with hazy vision, and didn’t realize the bottle of medication she picked up. Looking at her history, we can now understand why Abby does what she does. Taking cue from her past, we can say Abby is constantly insecure about herself and her actions. She seeks validation from people close to her, and sometimes, it doesn’t matter if that person is also someone she has met only once; like Julia Sweeney, for instance.

Also, if we analyze this against Abby’s past, we will see that this is not the first time she is putting herself through such a stressful situation. When she was with Melanie years ago, Abby let her insecurity and anxiety got the better of her and ruined her relationship with her girlfriend. Hiding who you really are is a classic symptom of being insecure about your reality. And the same happened with Abby.

Now that she has finally revealed the truth to Chris, we wonder if their relationship will prove to be strong enough to overcome the first roadblock.

‘Work In Progress’ airs every Sunday 11pm/10c only on Showtime.
