'Marshals' gets renewed for Season 2 soon after debut as Luke Grimes series pulls massive numbers
The new drama, ‘Marshals’, connected to the world of ‘Yellowstone’, barely had time to settle into its first few episodes before CBS made a quick decision. The network confirmed on March 12 that ‘Marshals’ will return for a second season. The interesting part? That announcement came just 12 days after the show premiered. Networks usually wait longer to see how audiences react, and whether interest holds steady after the early buzz fades. But this time the network didn’t waste much time. The series made its debut on March 1 and pulled in roughly 9.52 million viewers during its initial broadcast on CBS.
After one week of people catching up on different platforms, the premiere logged over 20 million viewers. That figure towers over most scripted programs currently airing on broadcast television. For context, the biggest non-sports show this season, ‘Tracker’, averages around 14.07 million viewers across viewing methods over a week. ‘Marshals’ flew past that mark almost immediately. While a big debut can sometimes be misleading, that was not the case here. The show’s second episode drew about 8.4 million viewers during its broadcast run. While the complete delayed-viewing numbers won’t arrive until later in the week, retaining that much of the initial audience already looks promising.
For longtime fans of ‘Yellowstone’, ‘Marshals’ offers a familiar face gearing up to take on a very different job. Luke Grimes returns as Kayce Dutton, the former rancher and Navy SEAL who spent years caught between family loyalty and personal convictions. In this new chapter, Kayce joins a federal law enforcement unit working across Montana. Moreover, Grimes isn’t carrying the story alone. The series features several actors joining him on screen, including Logan Marshall-Green, Arielle Kebbel, Ash Santos, and Tatanka Means. And yes, a few familiar faces from ‘Yellowstone’ make an appearance as well. Mo Brings Plenty, Brecken Merrill, and Gil Birmingham all return for the neo-Western drama.
While viewers mostly focus on the actors on screen, there’s a pretty stacked creative team steering the show. ‘Marshals’ is created by Spencer Hudnut, who also serves as the showrunner. The project also involves heavy hitters connected to the ‘Yellowstone’ universe, including Taylor Sheridan and John Linson. Production comes from Paramount Television Studios and 101 Studios. Season 1 is still in its early stretch, and there’s plenty of story left before anyone starts thinking too far ahead about Season 2. The next installment, Episode 3, arrives on March 15.
