'High Potential' Season 3 confirmed at ABC but the Kaitlin Olson series is losing a key figure
Well, the detectives at the LAPD aren’t getting a break anytime soon, as ‘High Potential’ is officially returning for a third season. The announcement arrived while Season 2 is still rolling out episodes. This seems like good news for the show, as networks don’t usually rush to renew something mid-run unless the numbers look solid. According to a report from Deadline, the crime series led by Kaitlin Olson has secured another installment for the 2026–2027 television season. However, the renewal comes with a twist behind the scenes. While the show will return, the person steering it since the beginning will not.
Original showrunner Todd Harthan is stepping away from the series as he shifts his attention to a different project: A live-action version of ‘Eragon’ being developed for Disney+. He will be working on that adaptation alongside Todd Helbing under a broader deal with 20th Television. For fans who’ve been watching since the show first arrived in 2024, that change might sting a little. Harthan has been part of the project from day one, guiding the tone, pacing, oddball humor, and that slightly chaotic energy Morgan brings to the precinct every week. And speaking of Morgan, the character remains the beating heart of the story.
Played by Olson, Morgan Gillory is introduced as a woman whose brain processes patterns faster than most people can blink. She isn’t a detective by training, but when the LAPD’s Major Crimes division realizes how sharp she is, they bring her in as a consultant. Suddenly, she’s solving puzzles that leave seasoned investigators scratching their heads. Each episode usually revolves around a fresh mystery, but the writers have also been sprinkling in personal storylines for the characters. Morgan and the rest of the team have been getting their moments in the spotlight, which gives viewers a glimpse into the team members' lives outside the station.
Season 2, currently airing, has leaned into that approach. One character who has received extra attention lately is Karadec, played by Daniel Sunjata. Earlier episodes mostly kept him focused on cases and procedure, but the newer season has been opening small windows into his personal world. And then there’s the tension between him and Morgan. The first season barely teased the possibility that their connection might go beyond professional respect. Season 2, though, has been dropping hints more often. Now that the show has another season guaranteed, that romantic thread might stretch even longer.
Meanwhile, there’s still plenty of unfinished business before Season 2 wraps up. Several episodes remain, as the overarching mystery involving Morgan’s former partner, Roman, continues. His disappearance has become the biggest question running through the series. Production on the current season has already concluded, which means the writers likely knew about the renewal before the public announcement. If that’s the case, they may have structured the remaining episodes with future plans in mind.
