Seth MacFarlane's latest update about future of 'Ted' raises sequel hopes: 'All on the table...'
Seth MacFarlane provided an interesting update about the fate of 'Ted' Season 3. The Peacock series explores the school days of John Bennett and his foul-mouthed teddy bear as they and their family deal with unique people and peculiar problems. MacFarlane created the character for the 2012 film 'Ted,' starring Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis. He also provided the voice and motion capture for the titular character. The popularity of the original films led to the prequel series, which premiered on the streaming service in January 2024, followed by a second season in March.
On Saturday, during the 'Ted' panel at Deadline Contenders TV, MacFarlane revealed that he and his team have been flirting with the idea of bringing the character back in live-action. This could be in the form of another season of the show or a new movie for Peacock. He said, "It really is up to Peacock with their, you know, vast amounts of big Scrooge McDuck money that they dive into every day. I think all of us, in some form or another—whether it’s a Season 3 of 'Ted' or a direct-to-Peacock feature with this cast - is something I think we’d all be up for. It’s all on the table."
This comes as a huge relief, especially after the five-time Emmy winner earlier brushed off the idea of making another season of the show in an interview with Screenrant. However, his latest comments have sparked hope among fans that they will see what happens to John and Ted after high school. Season 2 ended with John gearing up to join a gym, which will eventually turn him into the muscular Mark Wahlberg seen in the films. Before that, the duo created a fake daily newspaper to keep John's father, Matty, calm and avoid the risk of another heart attack. Their effort and execution impressed Matty, giving him hope for their future.
We already know from the films that their professional achievements will be anything but impressive. It is their personal quirks, unique problems, and hilarious conversations that keep viewers interested in their story. Alanna Ubach, who plays Susan Bennett, also added to MacFarlane's comments, "The wonderful thing about a character-driven show is that the possibilities are endless, right?" Besides the live-action projects, there was also an update on the upcoming animated series, which "is getting close to completion."
MacFarlane revealed that the story takes place after the events of the last movie. Hence, it is unlikely that the makers will pursue a live-action movie first, as they would have to match the timeline with that of the animated show and its potential sequels. 'Ted' Season 3 is a more linear and comparatively less complicated option, giving it a better chance of coming to fruition. Both seasons have achieved impressive viewership on Peacock while maintaining a positive critical reception. The streaming service and the makers will likely consider capitalizing on its earlier success.
