'Family Guy' spinoff 'Stewie' lands huge two-season Fox order as Seth MacFarlane expands Quahog universe
'Family Guy' needs no separate introduction, as throughout the course of its 24 seasons and 453 episodes, the show has firmly embedded itself into pop culture. In a testament to the animated show's enduring popularity, Fox and Hulu have greenlit the spinoff show 'Stewie', ordering two seasons from the creator Seth MacFarlane.
Portrayed on the original show as the foul-mouthed son of Peter Griffin and an immensely intelligent toddler, Stewie will find himself in preschool in the upcoming spinoff and will travel across space and time. Although an official release window has not yet been announced, one might expect the Stewie spinoff to arrive sometime in 2027-2028.
MacFarlane will jointly produce the spinoff show in association with 20th Animation. Apart from Stewie being picked up for two seasons, the other popular animated shows, including 'Family Guy', 'Bob's Burgers', 'American Dad!', and 'The Simpsons', have all received four-season renewals in 2025, making them part of the extraordinary four-season renewal deal at Fox.
A source close to the production has further revealed that the Stewie spinoff is a joint commission between Fox and Hulu, with the network and streaming platform sharing the production costs. The episodic count for the spinoff has yet to be revealed, though it might be slightly lower than the usual 15-episode season on the original show.
MacFarlane created the spinoff with his longtime collaborator and writer-producer, Kirker Butler, and will continue to voice Stewie.
The plot of the upcoming spinoff is expected to follow Stewie in the aftermath of his getting kicked out of his old preschool. He eventually finds himself at a new school, which isn't exactly something he can boast of. There's just a handful of other children with him, and there's a singular seventy-five-year-old class turtle who has an opinion about everything.
Stewie and the other kids are momentarily miserable until the former unveils his devices to take them on time and space travels. Although it's quite early in the day to tell for sure, it's expected that the spinoff's events won't affect the original show's timeline or the events in Quahog.
Speaking about the opportunity to make the upcoming spinoff, MacFarlane commented in his usual deadpan demeanor, "I’d like to thank Fox for this incredible opportunity, and I’m excited to start pretending I’m collaborating closely with them on the show."
Butler, on the other hand, remarked, "I am honored and humbled that Seth, 20th Television Animation, and Fox have trusted me with one of the most iconic animated characters in the history of television. I have known Seth for more than two decades, worked with him on half a dozen projects, and I am hopeful this is the one where he finally learns my name."
