Taylor Sheridan’s ‘Sicario 3’ finally gets an exciting production update
‘Sicario 3’ is finally moving forward. After years of uncertain updates, Josh Brolin has confirmed that the third film in Taylor Sheridan’s action franchise is happening and production is expected to begin soon. Brolin, who played CIA officer Matt Graver in both previous films, shared the update while promoting his new film, ‘The Dog Stars’. His comments offer the clearest sign yet that the long-delayed sequel has moved beyond development discussions. The third film has faced several setbacks since ‘Sicario: Day of the Soldado’ arrived in 2018. Plans for another sequel emerged after the second film performed well commercially, but progress slowed over the years. The 2023 Writers Guild of America strike also affected development, although producers later suggested that the script was close to completion.

It is still unclear who wrote the final screenplay, especially as Sheridan has spent the past several years building a major television slate. He created the original ‘Sicario’ screenplay, but his involvement in the upcoming installment has not been fully revealed. The biggest unanswered question is who is directing the film. Denis Villeneuve directed the acclaimed 2015 original, while Stefano Sollima took over for ‘Day of the Soldado’. Neither filmmaker has been officially confirmed for the third chapter. Christopher McQuarrie has also been linked to the project. Producer Molly Smith previously said that the ‘Mission: Impossible’ filmmaker was working on ‘Sicario 3’ as a partner in some capacity. However, it remains unclear whether he is involved as a writer, producer, or potential director.
Casting news is equally limited. Brolin’s confirmation strongly suggests that Matt Graver will return, but the rest of the ensemble has not been announced. Alejandro Gillick (Benicio del Toro) survived the events of the second film, leaving the door open for his return. The ending also introduced a possible new direction for his character after he encountered a young man connected to his past. Kate Macer (Emily Blunt), who led the first film, did not appear in the sequel. Fans have continued to speculate about whether the third installment could bring her back, but there has been no official confirmation. Brolin’s update is the most important development. ‘Sicario 3’ no longer appears stuck in development limbo. With production expected to begin soon, more concrete details about the director, returning cast, and story could finally emerge.
