Will there be another ‘Mission: Impossible’? What we know now that Tom Cruise’s $598M hit is streaming
For nearly three decades, Tom Cruise has defined the modern action genre through the ‘Mission: Impossible’ franchise. Earlier this year, that legacy reached what was billed as its dramatic conclusion when ‘Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning’ arrived in theaters. Now, almost six months later, the film has officially landed on Paramount+ as of December 4. The movie earned strong reviews upon release, holding an 80% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and pulling in an impressive $598 million worldwide before leaving theaters. The film marked the eighth adventure for Cruise’s legendary IMF agent.
But with its arrival on streaming, the conversation has shifted from celebration to speculation: is this really the end, or just the end for now? ‘The Final Reckoning’ closes Ethan Hunt’s current chapter with a sense of resolution but not finality. The film wraps up the overarching storyline involving the rogue AI known as The Entity. Gabriel, the film’s main antagonist, is killed, and Ethan gains control of the 5D device that permanently traps the AI’s consciousness. With global catastrophe averted and the world quietly saved from technological takeover, Ethan walks away alive, and crucially, unretired.
While the film concludes the immediate story arc, it leaves enough narrative breathing room for Ethan Hunt to reappear somewhere down the line. That ambiguity has fueled fan theories about whether ‘Mission: Impossible 9’ is inevitable. What is known is that Paramount has not announced any follow-up projects. Unlike many blockbuster franchises that map out years of sequels in advance, ‘Mission: Impossible’ has traditionally taken things one movie at a time. Aside from the unusual back-to-back announcements of the seventh and eighth installments, future entries have never been guaranteed.
As of now, the studio has no confirmed plans for new movies, spinoffs, or series expansions, according to ScreenRant. Still, the idea that there will never be another ‘Mission: Impossible’ film is difficult to imagine. The franchise is one of Paramount’s most valuable assets, earning over $4 billion across its run. A return, at some point, feels almost certain. Cruise’s long-term involvement is the largest puzzle piece. Early reports suggested that ‘The Final Reckoning’ might function as a graceful exit for him after nearly 30 years in the role. Yet the ending intentionally doesn’t close the door on Ethan Hunt.
This vagueness echoes comments from director Christopher McQuarrie, who reminded fans in 2023 that “plans change.” This implies that even internally, the future isn’t locked. Complicating the timeline is Cruise’s packed slate. After spending roughly five years working on ‘Dead Reckoning’ and ‘The Final Reckoning,’ he now has multiple non–M:I films in development. They include new original projects with McQuarrie, ‘Top Gun 3,’ and ‘Days of Thunder 2.’ He also recently struck a deal with Warner Bros. Also, one intriguing detail comes in the film’s final moments.
Luther’s farewell message includes the line, “The world still needs you,” which works both as an in-universe encouragement and a meta nod to Cruise’s irreplaceable impact on blockbuster cinema. It subtly suggests that Ethan’s story might not be entirely finished. If there is another ‘Mission: Impossible’ movie, it will likely only happen with Cruise’s blessing, if not his full involvement. He has been a producer since the very beginning and remains the franchise’s driving creative force. Paramount may one day explore rebooting or expanding the universe, but it’s clear that the decision rests firmly in his hands.
