‘Love Story’ boss teases Season 2 as he hints at iconic next couple after JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette
‘Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette’, the limited series backed by Ryan Murphy, has been pulling viewers into the whirlwind romance of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette. Creator Connor Hines, who is still riding the wave of Season 1’s reception, is already thinking about Season 2. And yes, he has a couple in mind. “Maybe Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton,” Hines said in an interview with Vanity Fair when asked about future directions. He added, “They have the right intensity.” Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton weren’t exactly subtle when it came to romance. Their relationship was messy, glamorous, and very public.

Their story kicked off on the set of ‘Cleopatra,’ and at the time, Taylor was married to Eddie Fisher, while Burton was with Sybil Williams, which only made the situation more complicated. According to a past interview featured in the BBC documentary ‘Elizabeth Taylor: Real Superstar’, Taylor once recalled a moment from early on. “The first day on the set, he was hungover and very vulnerable, and his hands were shaking. He asked me to hold a coffee cup up to his lips, and I was gone,” she revealed. What followed was anything but simple. They left their respective partners, tied the knot in 1964, and built a life that seemed equal parts glamorous and turbulent. Then they split in 1974, only to find their way back to each other a year later in 1975 and marry again, before calling it quits once more in 1976. It’s the kind of relationship that feels almost too dramatic to be real, except it was, and Hines clearly sees something there worth revisiting.
In the present timeline, though, Season 1 of ‘Love Story’ is heading toward the finale. The series will wrap up on March 26, and while viewers have been following the ups and downs of Kennedy Jr. and Bessette’s relationship, there’s an unavoidable tragedy hanging over the ending. That’s because in July 1999, Kennedy Jr., along with Carolyn and her sister Lauren, died in a plane crash off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard. “I think we all know what’s coming, it’s just how we’re telling it,” said Constance Zimmer, who plays Bessette’s mother Ann Freeman, in an interview with Decider. She added that parts of the finale are going to be “very, very difficult for everybody to watch.”
Hines, for his part, has been clear about his approach from the start. In a conversation with PEOPLE, he explained that the goal wasn’t to sensationalize but to present the characters in a way that feels grounded, aiming to capture “at least an essence of truth.” Now, as the finale approaches, conversations about a possible next chapter start to build, and the idea of shifting focus to another famous couple like Taylor and Burton feels like a natural continuation of the concept. Of course, nothing has been officially confirmed yet. But the fact that Hines is already speaking openly about future possibilities says a lot about where things might be headed.
