Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy are still hard to forget. Now, their romance is back in focus after the first chapter of ‘Love Story,’ a new anthology from Ryan Murphy, premiered on Hulu and FX. Rising actors Sarah Pidgeon and Paul Kelly step into the roles of Carolyn and John, respectively. But long before the television retelling, there was a dressing room.

In 1992, Carolyn worked in public relations at Calvin Klein, handling high-profile clients in a VIP fitting space. According to author Elizabeth Beller in her 2024 book ‘Once Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy’, that’s where she first met John. He walked in as a customer and walked out with new suits and her phone number. He called her a few days later, but their first official outing was awkward. At a gala dinner John invited her to, Carolyn reportedly bristled at the sight of another woman seated beside him. She skipped the afterparty and made it clear she had other plans. Yet weeks later, at a May 1992 fundraiser, something changed. The pair were spotted deep in conversation for over an hour, seemingly oblivious to the crowd. Just the two of them. That moment marked a turning point.
The Jackie factor
One issue lingered between 1992 and 1994: Carolyn had not been introduced to John’s mother, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. For Carolyn, that absence raised doubts. If this relationship was serious, why hadn’t she met the former First Lady? In a 2024 interview with PEOPLE, Beller revealed that Carolyn would occasionally “break up with him over the fact that he wasn't introducing her to Jackie.” She wanted clarity. Proof that this was more than tabloid chatter. But Jackie died in May 1994, and Carolyn never had the chance to meet her.
Who was Daryl Hannah?
Prior to falling for the Calvin Klein executive, John had been involved in a high-profile, on-and-off romance with actress Daryl Hannah. The two first met in the early 1980s while vacationing in St. Martin. They reconnected years later at the wedding of John’s aunt, Lee Radziwill, to director Herb Ross. By the early '90s, John and Hannah were regular fixtures in gossip columns, with rumors of an engagement swirling. Their relationship lasted more than five years before ending in 1994.
The proposal that didn’t get an immediate ‘Yes’

In July 1995, John proposed to Carolyn. At that point, he had already been crowned PEOPLE’s Sexiest Man Alive back in 1988, a title that was only another feather in his cap as Manhattan’s most eligible bachelor. Carolyn, however, didn’t rush her response. She waited. About three weeks. A close friend of John’s revealed to PEOPLE in 2017 that she “held the proposal off for about three weeks, which I think just made him all the more intent on marrying her.”
A secret ceremony on Cumberland Island
On September 21, 1996, they tied the knot in near secrecy on Georgia’s Cumberland Island. The chapel was small, holding fewer than a dozen pews and roughly 40 guests. Among them were John’s sister Caroline Kennedy and her husband Edwin Schlossberg, along with Carolyn’s mother and sister. Caroline’s daughters, Rose and Tatiana, scattered petals as flower girls. Her son, Jack, carried the rings.

On July 16, 1999, John piloted a small plane bound for Martha’s Vineyard. Thick fog rolled in over the Atlantic. At some point after 9.40 pm, the aircraft went down. John, Carolyn, and her sister Lauren were killed instantly. Their bodies were recovered days later. He was 38, while Carolyn was 33, and Lauren was 34. The shock rippled across the country. A young couple, often photographed laughing on city streets, was suddenly gone. And yet, somehow, their story remains.
