Will Lady Danbury return for ‘Bridgerton’ 5? Showrunner teases her ‘big part’ and addresses spinoff talks
Fans who watched the Season 4 finale of ‘Bridgerton’ saw Lady Danbury share a soft, almost wistful farewell with Queen Charlotte before setting off on her travels. It had that “is this the end?” energy. But breathe easy because she’s not vanishing into the countryside forever. Showrunner Jess Brownell has confirmed to TheWrap that Lady Danbury is very much part of the bigger picture moving forward. The show will feature her as a “big part of Season 5, when she does eventually come back.” That final scene between Lady Danbury, played by Adjoa Andoh, and Queen Charlotte, portrayed by Golda Rosheuvel, carried weight because it felt like a pause in a friendship that’s been tested. They’ve had friction and sharp words, and apparently, that tension was intentional this season.
According to Brownell, the creative decision wasn’t about shrinking Lady Danbury’s presence, it was about “shaking up the dynamic.” This season circled around relationships where one person holds more authority than the other, especially with Benedict and Sophie’s story taking center stage. So placing Lady Danbury and the Queen in a space where hierarchy comes into focus? That fit the mood. But here’s the twist. “Now that Danbury and the queen have been through their conflict this season, I think going forward, the queen is going to be able to see Danbury much more as a peer,” Brownell explained, “It allows us to put Alice in sort of the service lady in waiting role in storylines, and allow Danbury to just be an actual friend to the Queen.”
Alice Mondrich, played by Emma Naomi, has been slowly inching closer to the center of the action over multiple seasons. If you’ve been paying attention, you’ve probably noticed that the Mondrich family hasn’t just been hanging around for decoration. They’ve been climbing ranks in society. Brownell explained that each chapter has nudged them “one step closer to being a part of the main story.” Season 3 placed them among the nobility, while Season 4 saw Alice take on the role of lady-in-waiting. According to Brownell, “In Season 5 and beyond, it keeps Alice and Will really connected to whatever is going on, without us having to veer away from the leading couple.” And of course, fans are already thinking several steps ahead.
Lady Danbury heading off has sparked speculation about something bigger: a spinoff. When asked about that possibility, Brownell kept things diplomatic. Conversations about expanding the universe are always happening. But she made it clear that her focus stays planted firmly on the original series. In her words, “I leave that to Shonda. I’m so focused on ‘Bridgerton’ and hoping to see all eight siblings stories told that I try not to meddle in spinoffs, but I would definitely love to be a viewer of a Lady Danbury spinoff — or any of these characters really.” That said, she admitted she’d happily watch a Lady Danbury-focused show if it ever materialized. And really, who wouldn’t?
