Is Lady Danbury leaving 'Bridgerton'? Season 4 episodes spark concerns over her future
The first part of 'Bridgerton' Season 4 dropped on January 29, familiarising viewers with the budding romance between Luke Thompson's Benedict Bridgerton and Yerin Ha's Sophie Baek. Part 1 also floated the idea that Lady Agatha Danbury, the sharp-tongued, insightful, and highly influential doyenne of London's high society, might be leaving the Bridgerton universe. Played by Adjoa Andoh, Queen Charlotte's closest friend, Lady Danbury expressed her wish to leave the Ton in the premiere episode.
As reported by TVInsider, the 'Bridgerton' Season 4 episode saw Lady Danbury making up her mind about withdrawing from her societal duties and traveling back to her homeland with the permission of Queen Charlotte. However, apprehensive of being all by herself in her service to the King, Queen Charlotte refuses to grant the permission. The second episode shows the relationship between the two loving friends deteriorating before they reconnect again.
Lady Danbury soon learns that Queen Charlotte was worried about her husband's failing health. As a remedy, she suggests finding her a substitute from among the other society women and starts looking for a potential confidante. The search finally ends with her choosing Alice Mondrich, and Danbury presents her to the Queen as the right candidate to fill in on her behalf, according to a report by Netflix Life. By the end of the first half of 'Bridgerton' Season 4, Danbury has set things in motion that will ultimately lead to her departure.
Given these developments, it does seem likely that Andoh wouldn't be appearing in a prominent role in 'Bridgerton' seasons 5 and 6. Although it might come across as heartbreaking, the creative decision to retire Danbury and relegate her to the narrative sidelines is in line with Julia Quinn's novels. While Danbury appears in most of the books and shows up at important narrative junctures, her presence isn't consistently depicted in every book in the series.
The fifth and sixth books—'To Sir Phillip, With Love' and 'When He Was Wicked'—have been greenlit as the sources for the fifth and sixth seasons of the Netflix show, and the character of Danbury finds little mention in these two titles; however, given the way Netflix has built Adjoa Andoh's character as a central part of the plot, many are speculating that a Lady Danbury spinoff could be in the works. For now, it appears most likely that Danbury will continue to feature as a central character from time to time.
