You probably missed this Benedict–Sophie exchange in ‘Bridgerton’ Season 4, but we decoded it
The first part of Season 4 of 'Bridgerton' is finally here, and this time it is the bohemian brother Benedict, portrayed by Luke Thompson, who is struck by Cupid's arrow! Based on the Julia Quinn novel 'An Offer From A Gentleman', the fourth instalment of Netflix's Regency-era drama shifts gears to bring class consciousness to the narrative, which was hitherto missing from earlier seasons. For starters, the young and rich Benedict falls in love with an endearing but otherwise impoverished housemaid called Sophie Baek, played beautifully by Yerin Ha. However, there is one particular exchange the fans are curious about.
After crossing paths with each other at the masquerade ball hosted by Lady Violet Bridgerton, Benedict is awestruck and almost desperate to uncover the identity of the mysterious Lady in Silver, who has a firm grip on his heart. Once, after discovering that the Cinderella-like figure is actually Sophie, the maid, Benedict leaves no stone unturned in wooing her. The third episode of Season 4, titled 'The Field Next To The Other Road', featured a heart-warming scene inside Benedict's library when the two came across each other by chance, as described by Bustle.
The scene involved Sophie grabbing a random book from one of Benedict's bookshelves. When the latter pointed out that Sophie had picked his French grammar book, Sophie quipped back in French, revealing that she knew the language. Despite being an important character-building moment, Netflix decided to forgo English subtitles and captions for the scene. This consequently left many fans of the show, especially those unfamiliar with French, missing the exchange between the two leading characters. But don't worry, we have you covered.
Netflix Life recently published a report that included a translation of the dialogue for viewers. It can be inferred that since the exchange didn't advance the narrative, it was left without English subtitles.
Benedict: That is my French grammar book.
Sophie: And you assume I don't know how to speak French? I spoke for a long time.
Benedict: Ah, Raymund. We can speak French if you prefer.
Sophie: (Laughs)
Benedict: My pronunciation is exquisite. What is wrong with my pronunciation?
Sophie: It will be better if you keep your jaw perfectly still and rely on your lips.
Benedict: I do not even know how that would —
Sophie: Here. Focus on the lips.
Benedict: If you prefer?
Sophie: Look at me, if you prefer.
The romantic exchange soon led Benedict and Sophie to lean in to each other, on their way to the eventual kiss. Nevertheless, their moment was interrupted by the arrival of Mr. Crawford, who came in to inform Benedict that Mrs. Crawford was almost done preparing his dinner and would soon expect him to be in his bed. Sophie soon took the hint and excused herself, retiring to her boarding for the night. The second part of 'Bridgerton' Season 4 drops on February 26 exclusively on Netflix.
