Will Astro's Eunwoo leave his K-pop label? Fans discuss as contract renewal nears

K-pop group Astro's contract with their label Fantagio is set to expire in early 2023

Cha Eunwoo is a K-pop idol of the boy group Astro, as well as a K-drama actor. He has starred in several popular K-dramas like ‘True Beauty’, ‘My ID Is Gangnam Beauty’ and ‘Rookie Historian’. He is arguably one of the most popular artists under his label Fantagio. Fantagio's stock report suggests that Eunwoo single-handedly brought in 6.4 billion won ($5.2 million,) while Astro brought in 16.4 billion won ($13.3 million) in March 2021.

And with Astro’s contract set to expire in early 2023, fans have been wondering if the boy group and Eunwoo, in particular, will renew their contract. Korean netizens compared Eunwoo’s case with Apink’s Naeun who left her old label to work as an actress under YG. While she has constantly shown her loyalty to Apink, she caused quite an uproar in April when she finally ended up exiting the group too since she couldn’t juggle her acting and idol career.

Fans want Eunwoo to leave current label

Knetizens think that similarly, Eunwoo might end up leaving his label and Astro as well, “[Astro] as a group didn't have any big accomplishments so isn't it an obvious for [Cha Eunwoo] to leave? I think everyone would support him.” However, fans have a different argument. They claim that Fantagio is mistreating Astro and Eunwoo by not promoting them well. Many Arohas (Astro’s fandom) want all of the boys to leave Fantagio but stay together as a group.

‘Leave it to him’

One fan tweeted, “At this point you have got to be crazy to think that Eunwoo is renewing with Fantagio, he has had 3 schedules recently that have not had a retweet or mention from @ASTRO_Staff or @fantagiogroup. The LibberClassy muse/ambassador, the Dashu fansign, and the MC gig.”

Another commented, “Find a better company who promote you well eunwoo.” One fan posted, “Manifesting cha eunwoo release from contract so he can breathe and learn some self confidence again and stop worrying so much about what ppl think of him.”

Another made a reaction meme, “I’m 100% sure eunwoo is renewing his contract with fantagio…” One fan joked, “Fantagio when eunwoo won't renew the contract next year :.” Another added, “Some ppl always act like their beards are set on fire everytime anyone showing how they want eunwoo to move out of fantagio when the contract ends next year Y'all can wish him to renew i don't care But i can also wish him to move out.”

Some fans felt it was up to Eunwoo to decide, “See Eunwoo knows all these and he is the one to decide whether to renew the contract or not. I'm in no way supporting fanmu over poor promotions but in the end eunwoo knows what to do. He earns and he knows the cut from his paycheck:). Let's leave it to him.”

Another fan hoped all of Astro would leave, “Even if he decides to stay at Fanta, he will do that at better contract terms. But current situation is bad!! If u wish good for eunu or any member of astro, you wouldn't want them to stay at this incompetent company.”
