‘Scrubs’ reboot show is keeping its iconic theme song but the opening scene has a modern surprise
J.D., Turk, and Elliot slip back into their medical scrubs for the 'Scrubs' revival series, which is set to premiere on February 25 on ABC. Moreover, on February 24, the official Instagram page of the medical sitcom revealed that it's bringing back the original opening sequence (from Seasons 1-8) for the revival, but with a slight upgrade. The title sequence opens with John 'J.D.' Dorian (Zach Braff), Christopher Turk (Donald Faison), and Elliot Reid (Sarah Chalke) walking toward the signature 'Scrubs' X-ray image with a new batch of interns, as Lazlo Bane's 'Superman' plays in the background. But at the end, instead of J.D. placing the physical X-ray image on the screen, he now swipes his iPad to get the digital image to appear on the screen. The slight change is an ode to the medical advances made in the 17 years since the show ended its run in 2010. 'Scrubs' Season 9, themed 'Med School,' went with 'WAZ's cover of the song for its title sequence.
For those wondering about the plot of the reboot series, 'Scrubs' creator Bill Lawrence confirmed that the revival will pick up after the events of the Season 8 finale and will skip the storyline from Season 9. On February 20, he told Deadline, “We picked up this year as if the eighth year was the finale, and we’re starting now.” He went on to say, "I’ll never pretend Season 9 never happened," but admitted that the final season "just didn’t work" for the audience. As per the official synopsis of the 'Scrubs' reboot, "J.D. and Turk scrub in together for the first time in a long time: Medicine has changed; interns have changed; but their bromance has stood the test of time. Characters new and old navigate the waters of Sacred Heart with laughter, heart and some surprises along the way."
In addition to Braff, Faison, and Chalke, original cast members Judy Reyes and John C. McGinley will also reprise their recurring roles as head nurse Carla Espinosa and Dr. Perry Cox, respectively. Moreover, Rachel Bilson, Vanessa Bayer, Ava Bunn, Jacob Dudman, Neil Flynn, Lisa Gilroy, Joel Kim Booster, Phill Lewis, Christa Miller, Layla Mohammadi, David Gridley, Amanda Morrow, X Mayo, Robert Maschio, Andy Ridings, and Michael James Scott will appear as guest stars on the reboot series.
Aseem Batra serves as the showrunner and executive producer of the revival series alongside Lawrence, Jeff Ingold, and Liza Katzer for Doozer Productions. The show's lead stars, Braff, Faison, and Chalke, also serve as executive producers alongside Randall Winston. The new 'Scrubs' will return to ABC with a two-episode season premiere on Wednesday, February 25, at 8 p.m. ET. The episodes will be available for streaming the next day on Hulu.
