Luke Bryan defends Carrie Underwood after she was booed on ‘American Idol’ Season 24: ‘It’s tough to…’

Carrie Underwood gets booed on ‘American Idol’ after a bold critique, but her unapologetic stance and Luke Bryan’s support keep the spotlight burning.

It’s not every day that a judge on a reality show gets booed mid-episode, but that’s exactly what happened to Carrie Underwood. The moment in question occurred during a March episode of ‘American Idol’, right in the middle of the intense ‘Hollywood Week in Music City – Part 2’. Underwood had raised an eyebrow at one contestant’s decision to perform an original song, suggesting it might not have been the smartest move at that stage of the competition. That didn’t sit well with everyone watching live, and before long, a wave of boos rolled through the crowd. Still, Underwood didn’t back down then, and she isn’t changing her stance now either.

During the April 8 episode of the show’s official podcast, she revisited the situation alongside fellow judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie, with Danielle Fishel leading the conversation. “I don’t care,” she said, repeating the same sentence she had already shared online after the episode aired. Back then, she had posted a short and sharp message on X that read, “Boo me. I don’t care.” And if anyone thought that was just a heat-of-the-moment reaction, well turns out, she meant every word. Underwood explained that being honest is kind of her thing, whether people like it or not. She admitted that, “I can’t lie, I’m a terrible liar. As a fan of the show, if there was ever somebody that kind of had an off night and everybody’s like, ‘Oh, my God that’s so great,’ I’m sitting at home being like, ‘What? Liars!’”

So now that she’s on the other side of the table, she’s sticking to what feels real instead of playing nice for the sake of it. Bryan jumped in during the podcast to back her up, making it clear that judging isn’t just about throwing compliments around. According to him, “It’s tough to do as a judge. It takes a lot of confidence in yourself, and you don’t want to say something that’s going to tank them in the competition. It’s just something that they need to be thinking about if they go forward.” He didn’t just defend her after the fact, either. When the crowd started booing during that earlier episode, Bryan was quick to remind everyone exactly who they were reacting to.

After all, Underwood isn’t just any judge, she’s someone who’s been through the same process and actually won the whole thing. “She only won this. She knows,” he told the audience at the time, shutting down the noise as best as he could. As for the competition itself, things are heating up fast. Season 24 has now narrowed down to just 11 finalists, and the pressure is only going to ramp up from here. The next episode is set to air on April 13 at 8 p.m. on ABC, with streaming available the following day on Hulu.
